Question on profession switchingFollow

#1 Jun 13 2006 at 2:34 PM Rating: Decent
Hi!

I'm a 41 paladin and I have mining at 160 and Skinning at 284. I am planning to drop skinning for Engineering but am unsure when to do it. I'm definetly going to do it by 50 but wanted to know if I should have already dropped it.

I took 2 gathering professions at the start because I heard it was good for beginners to make money, and it has been. I'm just not sure if I'm at a point where I can make enough money selling drops from instances and such. I have about 65g between my main and my alt. My alt does alchemy but I haven't made much money from it yet.

I also know that Engineering involves almost no profit and I wouldn't be able to sell smelted bars much anymore because I would be using them to level Engineering.

What are your opinions on this?

I’ve found the Badlands to be a very good zone for farming iron and mithril. And you’re at about the right level to be adventuring in that area. So you may want to take a look in that area and see what you think. If your comfortable with the amount of ore you can dig up then go ahead and switch right now.

As for money, you can make as much money with mining as you’re willing to devote the time to. I made lots of money with my paladin before he hit level forty by mining iron and then mithril in the ogre and snow yeti areas above Southshore. But I did so by devoting time to doing that, as apposed to just mining what I happen to come across. And while you will be using a lot of resources to level up your engineering you can still sell iron in the auction house for some extra cash if you’re willing to put in the time to mine it.

Me thinks you have been listing to Mr. Gloomnous Doom, or just buying in to horrid steriotypes.

Firstly;
I also know that Engineering involves almost no profit
Just how do you know that? have you tryed or are you listing to general banter, or falling for some of the propaganda? I Make HUGE money as a engineer, for me it started at level 20. Dependant on faction(I failed as a allance engeneer but thrived as a horde, only becasue i had a better idea what to sell). Meny items I make are used in quests, and those are the items you need to focus on. The game also has a huge market for scopes(i can buy all the mats off the AH and still make a few silver off selling them, very few items in the game that works with). My recomendaion is to search quests and find what is needed to complete quests; the game has a lot of them, and I will tell you the one that payed for 3 epic mounts. Quest called It's asking a lot, due to it i can sell unstable triggers and Hi-explosive bombs and make a killing. an other trick i use is making compact havaster reapers and target dummies, theese guys give up the elusive Fused Wireing, on my server they sell for about 10-20 gold each. if the market will not sell the FW, i convert them in to Feild repair bots, and those go for on average of 35 gold a pop.

When should have you started?, level 5, as a pally you never realy had that level 40 hurdle to get over, the mount, though it is good to have some extra cheeze arround, I would recomend you start blowing stuff ASAP.

Not true, i use only a faraction of the bars i pull out of the ground for explosives, i am actualy usualy short the stone i need, so i sell surpluss bars. Heck if you are insane and use a explosive on every encounter maybe, but thats just wasetfull.

The biggest input is that if you wont use it, dont train it, bright eye goggles.... cloth dont train.... sepll power extream goggles.... same, Crappy guns nobody wants, dont train it. the cheapest most efective way to level is though explosives (at least till the end) and bullets(give them to your hunter freinds).

I ran numbers on my orc and this is what i saw,(at my servers prices for mats)
I spent about 235 gold (worth of mats trainers and AH for rare stuff, like thourim bullets)to level to 300.
I made about 2200 gold selling quest items and repair bots to other players(7 month strech)

so ya the job has been good to me, but thats becasue i worked it, and didnt take a copout that it is a job with no money in it.

Thanks Capitolg and Calabar.

I haven't had to stop and focus on making money yet because I couldn't afford something. Granted I don't have many blues (the ones I have I got from quests) I do consider my gear to be pretty decent.

Thanks for the cash tips Capitolg, I'll be sure to look into it.

At my level should I powerlevel engineering up buying mats off the AH or go to newbie zones and mine ore?

Thanks again.

A lot depends on how much available gold you have on you. I dropped Skinning for Alchemy at L58 with 500G in my backpack. It turned out that it wasn't enough gold to powerlevel Alchemy the entire way to 300. I wouldn't want to switch unless I had enough gold stored to powerlevel all the way.

just farm the stuff, not like it is hard, heck up untill iron, you can just ride up next to a mob and mine, then bolt, a prime example is the big pit ouside IF with troggs in it, their are at least 3 nodes down their and they spawn fast. in no time you will have what you need to start blowing stuff up.

That isn't true. You could power level alchemy to 300 within a couple hundred gold, its just how well you play the AH. Sometimes, high level herbs (such as mountain silversage) go on for about 10g a stack while it is really worth around 15-18g a stack. Also, when you get to a high level, try selling your potions as some of them won't aid you during battle, so why not sell it for some profit? In addition, its so much cheaper if you made like 60 minor healing potions, then make it into 60 lesser healing potions and start alternating between healing and mana potions.
