You will not make any money at all with the engineering skill. It is a huge money hole that, if skilled up diligently will allow you to use lots of quirky specialty items which can be very useful.

Almost all of the stuff you make as an engineer, though, is usable only by other engineers.... who can just go make the stuff themselves (and get skillups while doing it). Hence there is very little market for your products. The exceptions are EZ-Thro Dynamite (which doesn't generally sell for more than it costs to make) and the various scopes that can be attached to guns/bows. The higher end versions of scopes can be sold for slightly more than it takes to make them, but not much. You can also make money on a few particular high-end recipes that require goblin or gnomish engineering to make but only require regular engineering to use. These items (such as Goblin Jumper Cables XL) can be sold to engineers of the opposite discipline, since they can be used but not made themselves.

If all you want to do is make gold, then skinning (or better yet mining) is the way to go.

Engineering does have some good items to sell, but overall skinning is a heckuva lot better to make a quick and reliable buck :-P

I am a Hunter and I was doing engi and Mining.

1 Bag for food, 1 bag for bullets, 1 bag for parts, left me only 2 bags to gater stuff with.

I dropped Engi and went with Skinning. Made it to lvl 225 in only 3 hours farming and made like 5-6g doing it.

That is until the market for Leather went down the sh*tter, I like to think mainly cause of me :D. But even now I still pull in about 3g a day just skinning dead things i quested.

I say do it.

If money is your only goal, take two gathering professions. It’s as simple as that. Engineering is a great profession. I have two characters with engineering. But they have it because it’s fun and useful, not to make money.

I had engineering 202 but dropped it because I was sick of being poor and all the engineering stuff was taking up a lot of my precious bank space lol. I took up skinning...but I'm unsure of my choice. I'm on Turalyon, a new realm, but with sooo many hunters it didnt take long for all the leather for the war effort to be filled. Now Light leather sells for 10s, medium 50s, thick maybe 1g. I dont think it sells well either because almost everyone is a skinner. :( In fact I dont think anything sells well on my server, except maybe iron bars and greater, which is why I still have mining. :P

I'm a Skinning(300) Engineer(301).
I find that the Skinning hardly makes any money at all, and that Engineering is far more lucrative.
The bottom appears to have dropped out of the Skinning Market for everything other than Rugged Leather. ALL my leather goes to my Guild - It's not worth the hassle of trying to sell it, and I receive other favours in exchange for Leather - Pots, Reagents, Good Karma. By Contrast Engineering is turning into a little Goldmine though.

There are several quests that require high lvl engineered goods: Gyrochronatoms, Mithril Casing, Unstable Triggers, Hi Explosive Bombs, Delicate Arcanite Converters. Research these quests and put just the required number of items into the stack. Post them on AH and run a quick advert.
The profit made over a good *Casual* week will surprise and entertain.

No profession is designed to make money exclusively over all others. The money is made when 3 or 4 high-ish tradeskills work co-operatively , trading goods/reagents between each other to made things for the lowest cost to them, for their own chars and alts and to sell for a reasonable price (to others) rather than for the highest possible price.
My Advice is continue with Engineering, maybe dropping skinning for mining for the convenience, and hook up with an Alchemist (ideally one who is also a Herbalist).

At least on my server, I find skinning to be a good money making profession. And Balckhand was one of the original servers, so its one of the oldest around. However, there are two things to keep in mind.

1) Profit from leather is made from bulk. A stack of leather may not sell for five gold, but you can make that five gold by selling many stacks of leather. And since you can get leather off every beast you kill, you should have no trouble selling in bulk.

2) The market fluctuates a lot. I sometimes have to hold on to my leather for a time because the market is flooded. And sometimes I sell leather for a lot less than other times because the market value has been driven down. But if I price competitively I usually sell most of my leather.

I wouldn’t claim that skinning is the best gathering skill. But it is the easiest and it can be a good source of income.
