Some people rely heavily on mods for AH prices. Post a grey item for 100g ten or more days in a row and their mods (which scan the AH) will show that it's worth 100g or close to it (ie price average). Then post it again for 10g and the same mods will highlight this as a 90% discount. If the mark is sufficiently careless he'll jump at the bargain, thinking he can resell it for close to 100g and make a huge profit.

Note - I don't use this method or condone the practise in any way. It's a scam, just like the old 'send a gift-wrapped [Worthless Item] with a Cash on Delivery for 5g' trick. It may or may not make you wealthy, but it will certainly give you a reputation as worthless scum. Making money in this game is so easy that there is really no need for shortcuts like these scams.

It's also possible that some players need a new weapon or piece of armor and the gray item would actually be an upgrade for cheap. Just a thought? I noticed this too on my PvE server, but I never see grays on my PvP server.

I see alot of grey at the AH on my server, Magtheridon (pvp), and I expect they are there for a couple reasons. First as mentioned to play with the AH mod ppl and hope to find a careless one.

The second is that, on my server atlest, it seems to be popular for enchanters ( or rather DEs) camp the AH and buy great deals on greens and blues etc. to DE or to resell for better profits. When you sit and do that for a long time its pretty easy to accidently buy a cheap grey thinking it was green.

I have done the second one myself. I was grinding an enchanter and was making a killing buying super cheap greens and blues ( I got a good amount of small and large shards and tons of different dust) and when I went to the mail box one time I noticed I accidently bought a grey for about 1.7 G. I think crap what is a grey doing in the AH. Well it only vendored for like 40-60silver maybe. So by me not paying attention someone made a good 1g more than just vendoring it.

Lots of scams at the AH you gotta pay attention.

Low level shoulder pads are sold at the ah at reasonably fair prices.

Here's the list of Darkmoon Fair quests. Find the ones asking for items - those will sell at the AH.

Another reason for putting greys up is for movies. Some people will buy greys for movies because they help in a specific scene; like the rake weapon (sorry don't remember its name atm) for a scene in which someone is being run out of a town or something like that.

It is also a fact, that sometimes you highlight a specific item in order to buy it out, but when the transaction happens, the line of items has shifted, and you get the item that was placed below the one you wanted.
It's darn irritating, and it's happened maybe 5 times in total to me. Once I had payed over 2,5 gold for 1 egg, and I never even saw the egg until afterwards when I found it in my mailbox.

This is most likely to happen when there's a lot of people selling and buying at the same time.

It doesn't matter if the server is pvp or a pve. Every server get's their own dtyle and habbits, and people are quick to take up ideas that others start up.

On my server it is mostly low-lvl grey items that are being sold, and for very cheap prizes. I can see no other reason than maybe someone newly started is making his first few transactions and he has noticed what others like him might find useful.

I myself have a few times tried seeling greys, out of curiocity to see if they were actually being sold (had no Auction(eer)-mod at the time). But I soon returned to what I've always done: Selling whites as the lowest quality items I am willing to sell. Greys I may give to someone who happens to want it while I have it in my bag, but that happens rarely.

It is good info about a scamming technique, btw!
Keep them coming, folks!
We can all benefit from knowing about such things and avoid becoming victims of them!

Thanks for posting about this one! ^L^,

One reason I can think of to have greys on AH, is to send something from your ally char to your horde char, and vice versa (and also send money). Though of course this only works in the linked AH's like Gadgetzan and Booty Bay.

Reasons:

Darkmoon Faire Quests as mentioned above.

Mid / low level gear (Headgear / Shoulder pads) first appear as greys, then whites, greens etc, and does provide an armour boost, however slight.

To Con players (As mentioned above) - My least favourite explanation.

Put on AH by mistake.

To transfer Money between Alliance and Horde. (as above)

For novelty value: I've found a few grey notes in messages in bottles. They're actually quite funny to read. Selling them with an advert explaining why your selling them works.
Also having a rake or a spade as a weapon is quite funny. (as above)

To give away money. Some lvl 40 - 50 grey weapons will sell to a vendor for 2 / 3 Gold. Maybe it's a bargain if they're up for sale for a few silver.

b/c as with everything else in the AH ppl buy it. plus there are some good things for lvl 15-20 that are, i.e. cloth shoulders which casters usually dont get until lvl 20+, some tradeskill practice gear who knows but ppl buy it.

One item I like from the Darkmoon faire is the big leather ball. I threw it at some guy and hid, while he was spinning around, then yelled LOL!

Grey items on the AH are also probably the result of someone thinking it's actually worth something.
