I actually do very well out of skinning, although I get ALOT less for thick leather than what you do. The reason I picked skinning is that this being my second (main) toon, I wanted to lvl nice and quick and doing a crafting prof is just one big time sink.

By doing a bit of grinding in places where you can skin almost everything you kill, such as badlands, you can turn in a very nice profit for no extra effort and about 5 seconds extra per kill.

On my sever I sell 5% less than lowest item on AH and if they got a stack or not and when you sell sell stuff in bunches and the buyers well get to know who sells high and low and if you sell lower than the other sellers and they will probly buy from you about 75% of the time

I used to be a level 300 skinner. I didn't make a lot of money at it, but it was steady income as long as I sold Scorpid Scales, Turtle Scales, Heavy Leather, Thick Leather, and Rugged Leather. One thing you may consider is that you will have the ability to skin the beast to obtain the Pristine Hide of the Beast which, at least on the Moonrunner realm, is posted in the Auction House for between 1000g to 1500g. Really it depends on what amount of time you want to invest in ensuring you are always posting auctions with a decent price that will sell quickly. As I said, I didn't get rich off of it, but it was steady income.
