Well, there are three secondary professions: fishing, cooking, and first aid. All three are usually used to restore health and/or mana. Being a tailor, I'd suggest first aid. What you should do is either choose cooking and fishing, or just first aid. Choosing all three will be a great hassle. If you're not the patient type, I'd suggest just first aid, since fishing takes a while and isn't necessarily rewarding. Also, first aid heals more and at a faster rate, but food gives nice buffs after eating. Overall, I'd suggest first aid, but it's really up to you.

What on earth do you mean by that? This is the worst (and stupidest!) advise I've seen on this board. Get all three. It's not expensive, and all are rewarding.

1) First aid = bandages - fast healing (the only downside is that it competes with tailoring for cloth)
2) Cooking = Healing, but some recipes have other rewards (increased stats for a short period)
3) Fishing = most lucrative profession - anyone who can't make 20G/day from fishing at L30 isn't trying.

I don't think anyone has answered the OP's question. If you're wondering which gathering profesion makes the most money, I believe it to be herbalism, possibly skinning right behind that. The most lucrative way to go is skinning and herbalism. (not practical to go herbalism and mining, only one tracking can be used at a time)

As far as secondary profesions, get all three. Fishing and cooking sort of go together, and first aid will benefit you later.

To the OP, I would go with skinning if you don't want to buy leather to make bags. Or go herbalism to make money/trade to the guild alchemist for potions. Both of those worked fine for me.

To the secondary skills stuff... definitely go all three. HOWEVER, in terms of necessity, only First Aid is necessary. Fishing and Cooking (and yes, they level together perfectly) are good, but not my any means needed. They will save you money (cooking instead of buying food) and make you money (fishing; if you have any questions, ask Mike. He's the designated fishing guru here :-P).

I suggest all three, but know that F.A. is the most common. It is universally useful to all classes. And I have yet to see a guild at level 60 that doesn't demand you have F.A. at level 300. And hell, if that doesn't motivate you, it decreases downtime, increases survivability, and gives a non-healer a way to heal themselves. Take it!

From the context of the post, I believe the OP is asking what second, not secondary, profession he should take for his mage.

Any of the gathering professions can make you money. So what it really comes down to is play style.

Mining has proven to be the best money maker for me. But mining can be frustrating to level up and often requires you to go into mines and caves to get to the ore. While rogues and druids can often stealth their way to the ore the rest of us have to kill our way to it.

Herbs, save for ghost mushrooms, are found above ground. There are often mobs around them, but herbs are usually easier to access than ore and a heck of a lot more plentiful. However, you still have to run all over the zone looking for them or at least head off in random directions when you see them on your mini map. This can become a frustrating time sink for some players.

Skinning, however, is the easiest of the gathering professions in my opinion. Every beast you kill can be skinned right there and then. You can even skin the kills that other people leave lying around, as long as they have looted them. And there are skinable mobs all over the place. Skinning requires no extra running around and it levels very quickly. The down side is that leather doesn’t sell for as much as metal bars or herbs. The secret to making money with skinning is to sell in bulk.

So my advice is to pick the type of gathering profession you think you would enjoy most. Personally, I like them all. The one my mage has is skinning. And I have found one advantage to it. By taking time out to skin my kills I have more manna available for the next fight.
