Sometimes on my minimap, mining veins show up, but they appear a darker yellow, and the tooltip is in grey. When I go to the indicated vein, nothing is there. What do the greyed-out veins mean?

Mining Veins Greyed OutFollow
That means that the veins are probably located underground in a mine somewhere and that's why you can't get em. Look around for a cave or something and you'll probably find the vein inside.
