So i am lvling mining and just got to lvl 125 which is when you can iron. Up to this point i have been able to smelt to get skill gain. So i ran around the badlands for about 30 min and grabbed about 20-30 pieces of ore and decide to go back to Ogr and smelt em down. My skill is now 131 and when i go to smelt Iron is gray.... Is this a bug.. or at this point do you no longer gain skill for smelting? Any advice would be great

Smelting the ore will always go grey long before taping the vien will. You'll go through the same thing with mithril, etc. Gold, in my observation allows skillups for smelting longer than the rest. I didn't track the exact levels because I'm not that bored.

Hope that answers your question.

I think it's more the amount of smelting you do, rather than purely your level. I say this because smelting Copper had gone green before I even foudn my first Tin. I just would mine A LOT of copper and smelt it. I can't be sure of this tho. Smelting DOES lose skill-up potential before tapping veins does, this I know.

as i recall, gold is the last thing you will be able to smelt that gives you skill ups. (gold is the special version of iron).

it's very possible iron smelting already greyed out, this is normal. after gold, anything else you learn will also immediately be grey. this is also normal.

it's annoying but if you wanna fix this just spend an hour or so riding around a zone and just go after nodes
