They are decent. They are a lot better to grind on if you are
A) At their level or a little higher, and
B) A skinner, as you can sell their leather.

I farmed the turtles in the Hinterlands for the same reason. In about a week or so, I got around 5 pearls (averaged about one a day, for 3-4 hours a day). It might have been higher, actually; I had enough to make a Mooncloth Robe, that's all I remember.

Interesting to note, if you are not a skinner, the Naga in Feralas drop coin and the same clam shells. I already got one golden pearl off them today! I'm 44 and going to grind to at least 45 on those guys, maybe 46. Very profitable!

As a skinner, the leather you get from those turtles is:
A) Heavy Leather
B) Thick Leather
C) Turtle Shell

The turtle shell sells for the most, and provides a pretty steady income. Farming the turtles for only the occasional pearl (without skinning them) is an on/off thing. Most days you get nothing, but on a rare day, you can make up for all those hours of nothing with a pearl drop. Id' say grind them for the experience points. Any pearl drops you get are a bonus.
