After I hit ~150 mining, I've noticed that veins can only give 1 skillup max now. For instance, ever since I've been able to pick at Iron, the first pick I do always results in a skillup, but the next 2-4 picks only give me the ores/stones/gems.
So, is this a game mechanic (only one skillup per vein past level X mining), or is this just really, really, really bad luck?

It's game mechanic, and it's like that before 150 skill too, as far as I know.
First pick gives skill, the rest of them gives nothing.
Unless they've changed something, this also goes for under 150 skill.

I guess I can't remember because its been a while since I was at 150 mining, but I swear I at some point got more then 1 point in a vein. I know that I haven't for sometime now, sorry get used to it, but I don't remember before 150.

I have run into this but it is not what it seems. Sometimes veins are stacked on top of each other. I have only seen it with copper veins. When you look at it it looks like one vein but if you hold the mouse over the minimap blip it shows two veins in the same location.
Yeah, it's the same mechanic throughout the game. 1 Skill up per nide. Same as with herbs, although sometimes you get lucky and find a double-node, which will result in 2 skill ups (if applicable).
It is possible to get 2 (or maybe even more) mining levels from a single vein, but only if they are orange. if you fail in an attempt it seems to reset the node and read your next as a first try again, thus giving you a seocnd level. happened to me a couple of times.
