In my opinion the best way to make money is 2 gathering professions as stated by others. Skinning I believe to be the best because you are able to skin a majority of the mobs you kill and the leather stuff adds up fast. The others are a bit harded sometimes. Depending on the server you might be fighting other players for the Mines, plants, and so forth. It is well worth to have mining or herbalism though because as you are killing mobs for skinning you can run across alot of the other stuff.

A lot of the higher end players will sometimes drop gathering all togather and just buy thier supplies from the AH

i've actually thought of having my main be a gatherer and having an alt be a crafter also...so my main would have like skinning/mining and the alt has leatherwork/blacksmithing. its almost the best of both worlds but it sucks sending mass quantity of items in the mail all the time.
