I have a question for everyone and need some input. I have recently hit level 60 and have skinning and herbalism. Both are maxed out at 300. I was wondering though, how useful is Blacksmithing for end game recipes? It seems like there are a lot of fire resist items I could make with enough rep, and just a few other items that would be useful. But, would I completely go broke trying to level it up and have I missed a lot of recipes that drop in lower level instances that I could make to sell for some decent cash (Phantom blade, etc).
I guess part of it is being bored with just collecting things, but I tried out alchemy for a bit, got to 300, and found that it wasn't a fun as I had hoped it would be.
What I am looking for is a USEFUL and fun tradeskill, even if it means learning both from 1 to 300. Thanks!

IMO Alchemy is probably one of the more 'useful' skills, but I think in terms of fun Blacksmithing is right up there with engineering. If you're going to switch at 60 you probably already know it's going to take a lot of time, but if you have the cash, you can speed things up by buying the mats from the AH. Either way, it's going to be expensive... Blacksmithing at the higher levels I think must be the most expensive profession in the game, and I've maxed out every one of them.

The fun actually comes from the quests and things you have to go through to learn your profession, to get recipes and to specialize. Although engineering has some 'fun' things you can make, as a profession blacksmithing has a lot more to offer.

And there’s the rub. My level 60 rogue has skinning and mining. I find having these professions both useful and fun. Others would say the same about alchemy. What’s useful and fun for any of us may not be for you. Only you can decide that. My suggestion would be to look up the various items in the professions you’re considering. See what can be made and see where you need to go to get the patterns to drop or what reputation you need to buy them. That should give you some idea of how much work will be involved and if you think the usefulness and fun factor balance that out.

I have yet to see Engineering not be fun and useful. I mean you make PETS and GADGETS... OF COURSE it's fun and useful! Who doesn't want Goblin Rocket boots, or a Parachute Cloak... Or a Lil' Smoky... the leveling is actually not as tedious as you would think... It's no First Aid, but it levels a lot faster than Enchanting and Blacksmithing does... And unless your doing it for friends, I hardly see making armor and weapons (below standard ones IMO) is fun. Blacksmiths only get money in items you needed money to make money for in the first place! EX. Arcanite Reaper, Blackguard.

Engineers can make stuff for THEMSELVES, that only THEY can use, and can make actually fun gizmos for other people. And it's profitable! It's mostly for yourself IMO, but it's obviously "useful" in that term. People use Engineering on their 19 Rogue twinks for a reason...

I think you'll get in good with the Rogue crowd during the period where you make Practice Lockboxes. Give those away; they sell for crap, if at all.

(Rogues can use it for various tricks if not for leveling. *hem* reset timer glitch *hem*)

Engineering Is Very Fun. As Is Skinning. So I WOuld Drop Herbz And Pick Up Engineering, Make An Alt On The Same Server And Get Him To Mine For Your Engineering Materials.

Stuff like Blacksmithing and Leatherworking is useful/fun IF you find that super-rare epic recipe (ie. hide of the wild/lionheart helm) and/or you're the designated crafter in a resourceful guild (that can help you get the reputation you need to get other rare recipes). Other than that, I personally think they're more time/moneysink than anything else (unless you like to spam the trade channel a lot).. There are quite a few crafters around now, since the game has been out pretty long... so you probably won't be the only one with those "farmable" recipes... the hard part of making those items will more often be finding the ingredients too...

Herbalism/Alchemy is probably the best combo for making cash, I'd definitely reconsider this one :\

Mining is a good moneymaker as well, and since you're a warrior the arcane crystals you find can save you even more if you're going for crafted gear... of course, gathering skills will never be "useful" apart from making you rich or supplying alts with materials.

Skinning is an option, but I'd rather go herbalism or mining personally (seems to make more money)

Engineering may be useful in that you can equip/use a few special items, but it hasn't done me much good to be honest.. I was actually thinking of giving up but decided to keep it and level up mining on my shammy instead now that he's 60 too :\

Enchanting is semi-useful, but if you're in a big guild you'll most likely have a "designated" guild enchanter anyway, so in reality you'll only have it for the disenchant option (which is useful, at least while you level up and do quests). Leveling up this craft is painful, as you'll use reagents that are worth fortunes at the ah.. unless you like to spam etc ;)

I don't think I would take tailoring unless you're a clothwearer and want the BoP items.. but then again I never tried it :P

Another option if you don't have a lvl 50+ alt is to get herbalism/mining on your main and level up an alt to 40 for artisan alchemy.. This would probably be the most lucrative combo I could think of at the moment..

It's ONE of the most expensive... I think Enchanting might just win this award. As an enchanter (and loving every second of it) I make and drop about 100G (give or take) every time I log on. I'm constantly broke because of mat costs, and I hardly make any profit EVER seeing as how people have become.. well to put it lightly... greedy.

Now to talk about how cool and fun enchanting is. To be perfectly honest, it's my favorite thing about this game. To be able to go out and hunt for the proper materials by disenchanting and bargaining with people, only to take those materials and magically infuse them into an item is by far the most insanely fun thing to me.

Think of it, with Blacksmithing, you're hitting pieces of metal with a hammer. With Alchemy you're a flower pickin bum. With Engineering, well... Engineering is cool. Very cool. Leatherworking and Tailoring are okay, but not half as fun as making things go "ding" and glow! Come on! Be cool, and start enchanting!

I know people tell you that there's probably gonna be a guild enchanter, but honestly... that's what everyone in the guild thinks! So step up, and you can be the guild enchanter... if you are chances are that the guild will pitch in to buy you some of the cooler enchant recipes so you can enchant their gear with them (Crusader, Lifestealing).

If you choose Enchanting then you'll be needed, and wanted by everyone because EVERYONE NEEDS enchants. So this was my 2 cents about how awesome Enchanting is.. hope it helped hehe. ;)
