new prof idea: glassblowingFollow

#1 Jan 19 2006 at 1:13 AM Rating: Decent
well, ok.. here it goes
Ever since i started this game during the stress test after beta i've thought about Glassblowing as a tradeskill. i'm a glassblower in RL and pondered the thought of having one in the real game but the only thing i can think of is for the vials in alchemy. Maybe glass weapons and armor from silithus, glass materials needed to make other things, trinkets, salt shaker or even a glass golem would be cool, just brainstorming, heck even a dinner set.

Since I have migrated to WoW from Morrowind I think this is an interesting idea. In Morrowind, the best light armor you can get is made out of glass (for some reason it doesn't shatter when struck). This could open up a new class of armor and weapons that need enchanting also to produce a finished product (the enchanting is what keeps it from shattering by the way).

Glassblowing could also be used to make reagents and art objects as the OP also suggested, however the idea of the armor and weapons made of glass is what really peaked my interest.

well, there are a number of monocles (headgear) in the game, some can be worn, others not.

the Ogre's monocle is a quest item (white)
the Craftman's monocle is an item created by engineers (green)
the Chief Architect's monocle is a drop from BRD (blue)
the Eye of Flame is a drop from a lot of places (purple)

Amazingly, all of the ones that can be worn are made of cloth... I've always thought this funny.

Bullsye Softglass man here(preferd stock, I am not made of glass), and while I love softglass, Just cant see enuff stuff to make a profession out of it, I get a lot of seasonal work for christmass ornimants, so maybe the winter vail quest would use some , but if it were in the game i would get my Puny enchanted to be +5 to resist checks.

I guess that what you would need for a new profession would be something that did not compete with existing trade skills, and would also have unique playability characteristics.

So what can be done with glass (or glass-like stuff, like crystal)?

Prisms?
Crystal balls?
Colored glass?
Opaque glass?
Obsidian?

What would make items made of or from these substances unique and non-competetive? Remember that in the upcoming expansion, there will be jewelers, who will have the ability to create rings, necklaces, trinkets, and socketable gems. Armor and weapons are out, since there are already professions to make all they types of armor allowed (cloth, leather, mail, Plate), and blacksmiths can make weapons. You also don't want to compete with Engineers, so no elecronic tubes.

What about Off-hand items or perhaps wands - I can't think of any profession that makes wands (but I could be wrong). But it seems to me that glasswork would be necessary only for a few types of wands.

Another thing to consider is that you will need hundreds of recipes (from skill level 1 to skill level 300), in order to make this new profession useful.

Actually for armor there could be a new classification of armor called glass (or crystal) armor that when coupled with enchanting produces an armor that has a durability somewhere in equivelancy between leather and mail. At level 40 all cloth wearers would be able to wear crystal armor just like how hunters can switch to mail, and warriors and paladins can switch to plate.

right now, the best cloth that can be crafted for level 60 is the flarecore set, plus the belt of the archmage, bloodvine boots and bloodvine goggles, for 476 armor points.

the best leather armor that can be crafted for a level 40 leather wearer amounts to 673 armor points.

As a cloth wearer, I wouldn't mind even being able to upgrade to leather 20 levels lower than my level. Having said that, the armor is what it is to maintain a balance between clases. A mage or warlock in leather would be unkillable, much less any armor stronger than leather. I seriously don't think that Blizz would unbalance the game by giving cloth wearers much stronger armor.
