I know that some engineering devices have a chance to backfire, but with the chance of this happening, is engineering more hastle than worth? What engineering backfires have you experienced?
And I would like some opinion on whether Gnomish or Goblin engineering is better.

Thats your question to awnser, the info needed has been posted here time and time again, do some homework by going a few pages deep and reading.
As to backfire rate, depends on items, my net-O-matic has backfired about15% of the time, rooting me in place rather than my target, death ray has backfired and hit me for a few grand, dragon gun is about the same,shrinkray, backfirres and srhinks the party more than any other item backfire.
