Leatherworking vs TailoringFollow

#1 Jan 08 2006 at 7:56 PM Rating: Decent
In the past I've always done Alchemy/Herbalism because I was playing melee classes that needed a higher level of survivability. I recently started a Priest, and since healing is no longer a problem I decided to try Skinning. I love it.

I picked up Leatherworking even tho Im a cloth class because I like the armor kits to sell and give away but I want to know if there is a more worthwhile thing available in Tailoring I should drop for.

The way I see it, bags are the biggest thing in Tailoring vs Armor kits in Leatherworking. Are there any other "fun" items (non armor) that should tilt my decision? From the start I decided I am not going to be a Leather and Cloth armor maker.. its too much work IMO and I dont feel like devoting that much time to a third toon's tradeskilling.. so what would you do if you were in my place, with my limitations?

Regarding armor kits, the AH can become flooded very fast. I price mine a bit high, so sometimes I get undercut. If some folks place theirs too low, I but them up. I think you'll find that sometimes it can be hard to get the leather to make the kits, unless you enjoy hours of farming... I'd rather buy up the low-priced kits and also leather to make my own to sell.

I don't like farming, so I buy almost all my leather. I have 300 Tribal now. If you know how to work the market, you can do well with leatherworking.

I'm considering dropping skinning in the near future and taking up Tailoring as a 2nd crafting profession. That depends on my Timbermaw rep farming though, because at that time I can get a couple nice recipes from them.

I think the biggest thing that will make a difference for you is if you are on one of the new realms, or an old realm full of people with multiple level 60 characters. If it's a new realm, you'll do well selling lots of Leatherworker items. If an old realm, well, good luck...

Anyway, hope I helped at least a little...

Yes, thank you. What I was wondering specifically tho was, I've already ruled out the armormaking portion of the profession. I decided when I started this character that I wasn't going to do it. It's not so much a matter of what kind of armor I'll be making, it's more a matter of what ELSE does the profession have to offer besides making armor, that's all. It seems like it boiled down to armor kits vs bags.

I actually do enjoy farming.. it's the reason I picked up Skinning :)

If you don't make any armor in leatherworking, you'll never get high enough skill to make the upper level armor kits. You only get skill points for so long before you have to make something else to do the kits.

Same for the Tailoring, you'll have to make a variety of things to get your skill high enough to make the higher level items. Bags, shirts, armor, whatever.

edit: There really aren't any other things to make in leatherworking besides armor and armor kits. At high skill, 200 or 250, you can make deeprock salt every 3 days and cured rugged hides which sell well if you are strapped for cash.

Other than bags, tailoring is all about making cloth armor. So if you aren’t interested in making armor then bags are about it. But let me make a few other suggestions.

If you enjoy farming you might enjoy taking two gathering professions. So either skinning and mining or skinning and herbalism would work well. Or, if you don’t mind constantly playing with your mini map, you could take mining and herbalism.

Another option would be one of the above gathering professions and enchanting. Enchanting can be used as just a gathering skill, which means you don’t have to level up the profession at all. As an enchanter you can disenchant all the magic gear that isn’t really worth selling in the auction house and then sell the components in the auction house instead. This is also useful for when you upgrade to better gear. You can disenchant your old gear instead of selling it to an NPC for a few silver. You also have the option to level up your enchanting and becoming a true enchanter if you find the profession interesting.

Another option is mining and engineering. You seem to like to make things other than armor. Engineering allows you to make all kinds of things, from explosives and shrink rays to underwater breathing helms and pets. It’s a good profession for anyone who likes toys.

Thanks for the feedback, I should have clarified. I will make armor to level up, I just meant I don't plan on making money off it, it's too much of a bother.. the price wars on most full servers nowadays are terrible.

I think I'll stick to Tailoring. I figure if there ARE any cloth armor pieces worth making, I'll at the very least make them for myself (the priest).

As for Engineering - I love it, my alt mage is an engineer.

I would consider dropping Alchemy but I have so many rare recipes, most of the flasks and all the transmutes, for instance, that it is unfathomable for me to give those up. :(

well i would choose tailoring for one good reason
The cool clothing i mean for gods sake you can make Wedding dresses ect. i mean that rocks thats tilting me to tailoring as for leathworking ive found nothing in it worth making it a skill

I got my problem sorted out finally.. I turned my Alchemy/Miner into Alchemy/Skinning, and the reason for this was, keeping Alchemy because of all the recipes I had in it like I mentioned, but while gringing Wintersaber faction I thought about all those Chimeras and Bears I was letting go to waste.. so I dropped Mining. My Engineer/Miner is lvl 30 and he will soon be able to mine more high end metals so I can do without. I turned my Priest into a Tailor/LW so I can just send him all the stuff I find and let him sort it out. I get armor kits AND bags this way. :D

The only skill I have lost in all this is Herbalism. Guess I'll have to resort to buying them off the AH now. Oh well. The money from Mining and Skinning alone should cover that I suppose.
