What fish should I fish for cash? Im talking relative ease of catch combined with gold per stack. What is the most profitable fish too catch?

The only fish worthwhile to catch for money making purposes are deviate fish, oily blackmouth, firefin snapper, and stonescale eel. All else is trash for cooking.

On Burning Blade, stonescale eels go for 1g a pop. Firefins and Oily Blackmouths go anywhere from 80s-2g per stack of 20. Deviates i'm not sure, as the price ALWAYS varies. Depending on the time of day (yes it does matter), you can increase your catches of Stonescale eels. I started fishing these up for skill and cash at 200 in Steemwheedle port (tanaris).

I make about 20g an hour fishing stonescale eels, which is reasonable cash. You would prob get more mining thorium or mithril, but competing with other people is also hard. If you get to fishing 300 (not all that hard, obtainable in level 1 zones), and you have a high level char, head to Azhara(sp?) Bay of Storms. Theres places in the bay where you wont get aggro. This is a great place for stonescale eels. You get a 20% drop rate. My record is about 32 in an hour. But people have told me they've gotten a 45 record. If you do start fishing stonescale eels, the best possible time is 12am-6am server time. Might suck, but your % of eels caught will be higher, making you more cash.

Fishing may be boring, but up to 32g an hour can't hurt either. Either this or running around IF throwing snowballs, i'd rather make the money. Happy fishing^^

After the last patch.. throw on an Azure Silk Belt, or the trinket from the fishing contest, get some +100 lures and skill 300 and head to azhara. swim around looking for the blue fishing pools (like the schools of fish from lower lvl zones but glowing blue) I pulled 2 Essence of Water in about 20 min last night. (three pools)

Edit: By the way, does anybody know if the belt and the trinket stack for swim speed?

Even Albacore and Mackerel will sell at the AH if you list them. And Rockscale Cod and spotted yellowtail will sell for a gold easy pre stack.
'Course, none of those sell like Blackmouths and Firefins, but hey, it's better than cooking them and eating them.

Don't discount those fish, when cooked, that give a buff.

Sagefish
Greater Sagefish
Glossy Mightfish
Winter Squid
Summer Bass
Sunscale Salmon
Large Mightfish
Nightfin Snapper

Being able to catch a fish, cook it, then eat it for a buff is an excellent reason to develop cooking. Selling your creations might be a bit of a problem since not everyone knows that some foods do more than just restore health.

Don't forget that meduim-level land-based recipies give better stamina/spirit buffs. The only thing among those that actucally sell are Squid (rogues pay for agility), Nightfin Soup (casters pay for mana during long fights), and Salmon (melee pays to regen health).
Among those, noone knows about the nightfin so they dont buy it and the salmon doesnt give enough of a bonus to be noticed in big fights. The squid, on the other hand, is a gold mine in large quantities because rogues/hunters will burn through the stuff for the decent AGL bonus but they wont pay a whole lot for it...not to mention you catch it while going after stonescale eels. You may as well throw those junk fish in the AH for a little silver because they make excellent pet food.

the best pet food is lightning eels. But, however great they are, they still don't sell at the AH.

I have a lvl 50 cat. I fed him one and I was amazed. It showed he gained 35 happiness x 7 + 23 happiness + 0 happiness. Definitely a great food for pet.

Ohmikeghod, are you sure about the lightning eels? They're listed as a reagent, and don't look like anything that would be considered food. I don't have a hunter, so I really have no clue. But I've got about 4 stacks of these lingering around in my bank (stupid world event, got me fishing Frostfire Hot Springs for salmon) so if they really can be eaten by pets (and they're better than, say, Lobster Stew) then I can ship them off to my guildies.

Of course, I can't be sure (not being a hunter). After catching several stacks (and being unable to sell them at the AH) and checking all the threads here and on Thott about them, I came to the conclusion that they are either unuseable, reserved for future use, or a combo of both. I can fish for them any time and all they were doing was cluttering up my bank slots waiting for a use, which is why I finally gave them to someone who needed pet food. I didn't get any complaints, so the pet must have eaten them.

yes the eels are great pet food. think they may even rate higher than typical lvl 45 food for your pet's well fed rating. Hunters in my guild love them. this info is also noted in Thottbot
