Engineering: Goblin Vs GnomishFollow

Goblin seems to be the favorite from people that I know.

Gnomish stuff only needs to be obtained (made or bought) once, so you can live without needing to be able to make the stuff at all.

The Goblin stuff has to be made over and over because it's mostly explosives and consumables. So to be using the Goblin stuff you basicly need to be able to rebuild it.

On the other hand, most of the Goblin stuff is just bombs, while the Gnomes have "effects" stuff, like a sweet MC cap and that kind of things.

At first sight, it looks like, if you take Goblin you can get the stuff from a Gnomish engineer and you'll have most of both sides. If you get Gnomish you'll have to either live without the Goblin stuff or be constantly resupplied by a Goblin guy.

I like the Gnomish stuff better, I can get it and use it without being Gnomish, but I fear at some point Blizz may change some Gnomish stuff from BoEs to BoPs and then I'd be really screwed.

When you take a subspecialization (Gnomish, Goblin, Armorsmith, Axesmith) there is NO WAY to undo that and go back to take a different specialization instead.

I have found the exact opposite. I know of almost no one who takes Goblin engineering. The reasoning is because the explosives made are just too darn expensive; whereas the items made by gnomish are usually only limited by cooldowns, not by materials. Finally, when Gnomish goes wrong, funny stuff happens: you get an effect on you when it backfires (ie: you get netted to the ground instead of the enemy, or you get Mind-controlled). When Goblin goes wrong, you set yourself on fire or blow yourself up.

For the BoPs:

Dragon Gun versus Death Ray: The Dragon Gun does less damage to a single target, but can do decent damage to multiple targets (overall). It can explode, and you get set on fire (fear effect and DoT). The Death Ray drains life to do damage to one target. At level 30, my highest hit was around 2000 damage (critical hit). If you get stunned, or move, you've still taken the damage but the ray doesn't activate. I still prefer the Death Ray: it does major damage, has a decent range, and is perfect for anyone not taking direct hits (like my Warlock).

Battle Chicken versus Bomb Dispenser: A fighting chicken just suits me better. The Bomb dispenser is basically a free high-power explosive sheep every 30 minutes. The battle chicken is an NPC pet.

As I said before, even if I was a Goblin engineer, the material cost of the bombs can get too expensive to be worth making later on. I like Gnomish ^_^

Yeah good points but with the goblin and gnomish engineering, you can unlearn gnomish and goblin engineering.

from what ive heard you destroy your card and talk to some engineering trainer somewhere :P

Nah, 'fraid not :-(. Once you choose a path, you are permanently keyed into it. If you toss your card, the only difference is that you cannot access the list of specialty schematics (schematics? Schemata? Schema? One of those). Even if you drop engineering and level it back up to 200, you are still whatever your previous path was.

Same deal with Blacksmithing and Leatherworking. Choose wisely!

I like more the Gnomish stuff:
Shrink Ray. (BoE)
Net-o-Matic. (BoE)
MC Cap. (BoE)
World Enlarger. (BoE)
Rocket Boots. (BoE)

If I go Goblin, all the cool Gnomish stuff is BoE, so I can trade it and get it and I'm done. And then I'd be able to build the Goblin stuff, which requires to be built over and over.

The Goblin Zapper Charge. If I get Gnome I'll still be able to use it but I won't be able to make them.

The GOBLIN Rocket boots are BoE, but from what I've read they break and need to be repaired, if I go Gnomish I will not be able to repair them. If I go Goblin I'll be able to repair them, AND I'll be able to have the Gnomish boots too which don't need to be repaired.

There is mainly 3 kinds of explosives:
- Dynamites, do damage.
- Disorient Bombs, do damage and disorient.
- Stun Bombs, the only is the Goblin mortar (6 charge AoE stun reloadable 10yd radius) Can only be built/reloaded by Goblins.

Death Ray + BattleChicken Vs Dragon Gun + Bomb Dispenser:
This is an issue of single target or multiple targets. IMHO, when there is a single target there isn't that much need for these kind of extras, if the single target is very big then 1 shot from Death Ray wont do much, if it's not that big then you probably don't need it much.

My concern is mostly because of the game's constant changing. If the game was going to stay "as is" it would be an easy choice to just go Goblin and get my Gnome items (Which I do like more than the Goblin stuff) from a Gnome Eng. But some items could be changed to BoP, or they could add *new* BoP Gnomish items, and then I would not be able to obtain them.

This is specially difficult because, well, heck, the expansions will come, new stuff will come and all, and you can undo going engineering, but you can't undo the goblin/gnomish part.
