Herbalism VS MiningFollow

#1 Dec 09 2005 at 10:20 AM Rating: Decent
Hi all.

Im a lvl 44 rogue atm. Im saving up for epic mount and wondering if i should drop skinning (have skinning / mining about 240 both) for herbalism, since those mid-lvl and veryhigh-lvl herbs seem to sell very very good.

I know that this normally not liked since both use trackers, but it could be solved with Gatherer, which i have used for a long time btw, so i have a descent amount of locations in the lvls from 1-40, and using the trackers smartly.

Like use Track Herbs in zones with more herbs than veins, and same with track veins. And anyway keep changing trackers pretty often.

Anyone know if this could work out?

And another thing:

I once saw this movie with a Rogue in BRD (think it was atleast) that was mining Dark Iron. Since im Rogue im wondering if mining could turn to a big money maker when i can start doing such stealth BRD runs solo?

Or would herbalism still beat mining in making money, even over Dark Iron farming?

Hope you can answer some of this :)

Well first the bad news. I've no idea about Dark Iron. What's more, I've never really used Mining beyond Silver/Gold Veins.

Now the good news. For the love of god take up Herbalism. I'll say what I usually say on this topic.

On my server Maelstrom, I'm sitting at 300 in herbalism. Every day when I start my usual session I check the AH and see what's going to sell well. From what I've seen, the big money makers are the following:

Blindweed per stack = 7-8g Average
Sungrass per stack = 7-10g Average
Mountain Silversage = 10g per x5

If you head over to Swamp Of Sorrows you can round up a full stack of Blindweed in about 15minutes. Sungrass is a full stack in hinterlands in about 30mins as it's usually a bit harder to track down. Mountain Silversage is the big seller, but people i find like them sold per x5 as that's 5 mats for major healing pots. On the downside there, it can be a bugger to round up as it's mainly in Un'goro. Sometimes found scattered elsewhere though.

I'm sitting at lvl 54, and am carting around 1134g right now. That's with spending about an hour a day herbing, then doing w/e questing or instancing I normally do. Per day I crank in around 30g or so if I manage 3-4 stacks. Easiest money in the game by far. Mining be damned.

P.S. Sorry about the long post. Just have alot to say about it.

Ok sounds great. But what are your other profession then?

I had my skinning and leather both to 300 and I ditched skinning. Found I rarely used what I skinned anymore, anyone who wanted to buy something supplied their own, and I wanted something better.

Ditching skinning for herbs would be what I would do.

I'm not 100% sure on the EXACT prices, as they drop and rise all the time. Please correct me with an average(if you find one)
Mining Prices(On my server):
Copper[Stack]: ~20-40s
Tin[Stack]: ~20-40s
Iron[Stack]: ~80s-1g 20s
Gold[Stack]: ~1g-1g 40s
Steel[Stack]: ~90s-1g 35s
Mithril[Stack]: ~1g 50s-2g
Truesilver[Stack]: ~1g-2g
Thorium[Stack]: ~3g 40s-5g
Dark Iron[Stack]: ~5g-8g

Those are prices for Bars. Ore is usually a little less.

On my server i think that Tin is less than Copper. Tin really sucks, its like 25-30s buyout.

Iron is okay, its about 2g-3.5g
Mithril seems to be less than Iron, which i think really sucks.

I havent gotten any Thorium yet, and only 2 Truesilver ores, so i havent checked those priced atm.

If a stack of Dark Iron Bars is 5-8g thats just enough to make me stop mining right now. You need 8 Ores and have to go to that place to make them, and just learing to smelt it costs a lot of other stuff.

Are you sure you dont mean like 1 Bar, or a stack of Dark Iron Ore?

Something like this i though of when choosing mining for money, i dunno now if its a good idea, and if herbs just sell better than Dark Iron, and are much easier to get..

Anyone know?

Drop the skinning! Take up herbing.
Its way faster money making just like mining.
get on you horce and make your rounds. the gathere does make it easy for you :)

Dont drop mining Mining is better not at low lvl but for a rogue at hi lvl you can beat the system and mine dark iron al day long if you have the key to the city (not telling more you figuere the trick out:P)
Second bonus if you have the mats moost blacks give you the weapons and armor for free...
third and last from mining you get gems wel thorium wil always sell good there is a bonus acanite if it drops well count on 16 to 20 G extra :O)

Sorry about not responding for a while. Forgot about this thread.

My other Profession is alchemy. My Mains a 55 dwarf/priest on maelstrom, and I can say that Alch has saved me more times than I can count. I go through Superior mana pots nearly every instance run now. Plus when grinding, there's a bunch of pots to make escape easy.

I.E. I'm in Western Plaguelands doing a random quest. I always have the camera behind me so I don't get backstabbed by horde. I see a lvl 56/55 hunter/priest come up behind me. I kill off the mob, down a invisibilty pot, and off I go. No death for me.

Once you get the final batch of recipes, you can sell of fire resist pots like mad (MC runs), mana/heal pots, stoneshield pots sell well also.

Some swear by eng/mi, some like sk/gathering. If it's coin though, I like my herb alch.

Do you think i should choose Herb / Alchemy over Herb / Mining then? Talking money making.. ?

Remember all of this depends on the type of player you are. You aren't going to make money if you don't like what you are doing, because you won't do it. If you like to farm, take up gathering professions, they only require time to make decent money. If you hate farming, take up crafting and something like skinning that requires little running around the world to farm specific areas. My advice is skinning / mining if you are going to farm. Mining has big ticket items, and is plentiful and easy. Also you can skin on your way. You will find this an easier combo then mining/herb or herb/skin IMHO

I used this in another post but it applies here so take it for what its worth:

Herbalism doesn't really have big ticket items, nor does skinning. Your money will be made in the quantity of how much you sell.

For skinning this is good because you can skin as you level and since there are beasts to skin everywhere your resources are abundent.

With herbalism, Fadeleaf on some servers is worth quite a bit, as it is used heavily by rogues. Swift thistle and briarthorn are also good sells. But most of the time herbs that are good sells are rarer to find, i.e. Mountain Silversage, Gromsblood, etc.

A better profession then herbalism IMHO is mining. First off, there are 2 crafting professions that utilize materials from mining (Engineering and Blacksmithing), so when you AH your market will be broadened. Additionally, more people are blacksmiths then alchemists generally, so that also broadens the buying pool, and I have found that blacksmiths tend to buy more mats then do alchemists.

Also, mining has a number of big ticket items once you get up in lvl and skill. On dragonmaw, a stack of thorium goes for 10g, and arcane crystals go for about 20g a piece. Dark iron is a big ticket item on my guild as it is needed for crafting a lot of MC FR gear and also used for those looking for rep from TB. I have also found mining supplies much more plentiful the herbs. I recently switch from 300 herbalism / 300 alchemy to 300 Alch / and picked up mining. I was able to lvl to 100 mining in a matter of a few hours of farming, if that.

I have lvl'd almost all of the professions, and money wise its all in how you do it and how you much you like to farm. I have a 300 enchanter that can make 10-60g on instance run just from DE'ing. I usually tailor to feed my enchanting mats supply. Mining is so far, easy and plentiful, much more so the picking herbs ever was (and I hate farming, yet mining seems ok). Skinning you can hit 300 skill lvl by 35 easily and the pure quantity makes up for the lower sell prices.

Hope this helps.
