dragonscale - leatherworkingFollow

#1 Oct 24 2005 at 4:28 AM Rating: Decent
hi,

my hunter, just reached lv41 and i am now considering upgrading with leatherworking skills.

i've read all sorts of forums, and most of them suggest that hunters should go for elemental. Now, i think dragonscale is far more interesting especially that i can now wear mail.

but find dragon scales looks like mission impossible at my level !! i will die before i even have a chance to get my 1st scale !

how did you guys managed it ???

thanks

Normally elemental is for rogues. Tribal for druids. Dragonscale for hunters/shaman. Rogues/Druids can pick either really, but Dragonscale makes almost all mail armor, so no use for anyone but hunters and shaman.

Anyway, until you get higher level, you might just buy the scales off of the AH. I remember in the past people would complain about the extremely low drop rate of the scales on anything buy mobs in instances.

Aaaa i know the feeling, and realy at 41 it may not be too doable, but 43 is a whole diffrent ball o wax.

The first scales you will need are worn dragonsales(10 just to become a Dragonsale LW) and even when my shaman droped alchemy and went to LW at 56 getting 10 was a PITA. But the coin has 2 sided. If you are alliance it is a bit eazer(due to city proxmity), but never impossible. Step one is whelpings in the badlands, I know you need piles of Thick leather, and they are a good source of it, but also sometimes, you will get a worn dragonscale. One thing that makes this "Doable" Is that those whelps drop actual money(not sure where they keep it) as well as some vendor trash(still worth some good coin if you keep it and sell in volume). With time you will get the 10 you need for the quest as well as a few stacks of leather.

Other methods, right next(south) to those whelplings, are some full blown dragonkin, not that the drop chance on them is much better but every now and then you will get 2 worndragonscales when skinning them. I am not implying that you drag you level 41 backside over their and start killing dragons, but i am saying that if somebody is overtheir killing them for a quest(and their is a quest for it) that you ask(if you can) If you can skinn those dragons. All in all i have to say that Dragonscale is a good choice for hunters, while my hunter did not choose it, i have transferd a buch of stuff to my hunter form my shaman and it works out great.

Lvl 41...that was when I started the Dragonscale Leatherworking quest I then finished at lvl 43. What I remember as most difficult, wasn't the Worn Dragonscales (just bought 8 of them - they go in my server for 7,5s - 25s), it was to gather the scorpid scales in Tanaris. I spent 2 days farming there the 40 scales you need for the quest and 20 for my own scorpid scale items. Just a suggestion, there are some scorpions in Uldaman, next to the Dwarf Galgann Firehammer, I use to get 4 to 8 scorpid scales per run. This is much more funnier than the desert expierence ;)

If you need the scales, you also will want to check out the eastern area of Badlands for the whelps. MOB lvl is 43-46 (not sure), but drop rate is slightly higher than for the ones in Dustwallow Marsh. I got about 4 scales in an hour soloing them with my pet.

Next step is going to be to farm the black dragonscales, which can be skinned from the dragons in the eastern part of burning steppes. Mob lvls start at 51 (whelps), I went there with lvl 46 and luckily joined a group questing there. I got 5 black dragonscales, 2 worn, 3 stacks of rugged leather and 1-2 of thick in one hour :)

Just another suggestion, you don't need to farm blue or green dragons for the scales just to skill up. As an ally, you will not be able to sell them and definitively you won't wear them (shammies stuff). Just level up crafting the wicked and runic leather, it's so much easier. Now I'm level 53 with skill 290 and the only piece of dragonscale I made were the dragonscale gauntlets (which I'm still wearing). But I'm saving black dragonscales for the black dragon mail set i'm going to craft for myself soon, love the new bonuses on this set :)

you can reach 300 skill without doing anything other than the non-advanced recipes. that might be a good option for you until you get higher level.

this happens a lot where the items you need aren't necessarily easy to get until later.

eg my lvl 23 mage character could get tin ore much easier if he would spend the next 5 hours levelling to 25 or 26..instead of slowly picking at the mobs around tin ore veins at lvl 23.

same with turtle scales and scorpid scales. on the level at which you might be able to wear that armor piece, you're only able to kill the mobs which rarely drop the scales.

lawrie, u saying u cant kill a lvl 45 at lvl 41???
hmmm odd, just wondering if thats what u ment, not being able to kill a lvl 45 mob at 41

must have been some bad luck or something, when my 2nd hunter hit lvl 40 i went and got dragonscale right away, cause of how nice the dragonscale(certainly black) are now, and also i got to 300 leatherworking at 40, by just making the Wicked leather stuff(anyone that was yellow-orange) and now i can make (bought for 4g) the black dragonscale body, if i had 40 black dragonscales, to survive killing the whelps in badlands u have to go slowly, and keep watching ur back, they have range attacks, and they usually hurt, just gotta go slowly and keep watching all around u and it can be done. now i just gotta get ot 60 and get to the stupid guys that sell the rest of the black dragonscale set(and get the rep required...) and ill be happy with the full black dragonscale set :)
