Hi.

I heard Gnomish Death Ray would deal to you half of the damage, it deals to your Target. Is that true? (In this chase, I would go for Gobo...)
Also I'd like to know, if it can fail and deal damage only to you...

It does damage you for usually 600 pts. so it's good to have a healing potion on you ready to go. The first time I used my deathray, I hit a crit for over 2000... I love it. It's never failed, I don't think it does, it only varies on damage done and never seems to be less than 900. It's by far my favorite item in the game so far. Thanks to it I've soloed some quests with +5 lvl mobs that would've been impossible without it. I know it's a tough choice goblin/gnome, but I'm terribly happy with my choice... gooodluck.

What are the best professions for a low level Warlock? I was thinking Alchemy and Herbalism. What would be better?

Random question for this topic, but I guess it'll depend. I see three production choices:

Tailoring/???:

Pros: Make your own armor (and pretty nice armor too), and bags (very good for a new player).

Can take either a gathering trade (mining/herbalism/skinning) as a second for more money, or enchanting... which will make you very broke until you are a high level.

Cons: By the end game the stuff you can make is pretty much outclassed by normal instance drops (Dreadmist > Mooncloth). Also, doesn't make much money besides bags, which are usually competitively priced at the AH.

Herbalism/Alchemy:

Pros: You boost your stats right from the beginning in all different areas. Alchemy items can be used by all players, so they potentially sell well. And herbalism is a good gathering skill to make some extra money; but not as profitable as mining in most cases. Also, transmuting Arcanite will make you 3-5 days for no effort every 2 days.

Cons: No huge money-makers in Alchemy itself besides small amounts from a few select potions and transmuting. Herbalism is great for extra money; but only alchemists use herbs for the most part, so the demand is less than ore (which engineers and smiths use).

Mining/Engineering:

Pros: Arguably (but not much argument: it is) the best PvP skill. Engineers also get headgear a few levels earlier; I made my Warlock goggles at level 16; most headgear is found only level 25ish+. Bombs/grenades buy you time and save mana in battles in PvE too. Then you get fun items like Exploding Sheep, et al. If you're a Gnome Warlock, you have a +15 bonus to this.

Cons: Engineering is a money sink: you can lose a lot, and make very little. Why? Because only engineers can use engineering items (phooey). Sure, you have stuff like E-Z Thro Dynamite, but it's only for a little bit of damage. On the plus side, mining can make you some extra money; but engineering needs a lot of ore, and will drain it fast.

I would recommend alchemy or Tailoring over engineering on your first character. The plus side with all of these is that a Warlock doesn't need to get money for a mount, as you get a spell for it. So go with what you want, really.

So deathray sounds quite good. But everybody adds a "when it crits" to his description. How often does it crit?

I have an Engineer priest,,use shield before firing,,,crits about a third of the time,,only use it when solo grinding or when Boss is almost done in group. Everyone healed release the blue zap!!

Not sure if mana shield works the same way for mages.

For a lock to use it,make sure HP's are good, know you locks have a boatload!! Great if your pet is about to bite the bullet.
