I am needing a load of red and black dragon scale and if anyone can tell me where is best to farm for it with my lev 51 mage I would be grateful. If there is no where decent until I'm a higher level please post it anyway.

Cheers

cheers dude rate up for u!

Havent been to the Burning Steppes yet...
Will it be pretty obvious where they are when I get there?
What sorta level are they?
... and do you expereince much gankidge there?

Sorry for all the extra questions, just I couldn't see whelps in the Burning Steppes from Allakhazam's search tools!?

Also to mention I'm not a skinner so it'd have to just be off drops.

In the south east corner near the outpost (i forget the name) level 51ish maybe 52. If you miss them the you don't need dragon scales very badly :-P. Watch out for the dragonkin elites that roam the area. They are 51 -54elites. just give them lost of room. Not too bad with the ganking.

Hi all,

I'm a lvl 52 Hunter (Dragonscale leatherworker with skinning) and I use to farm black dragonscales along the eastern part of Burning Steppes. The mobs that drop them (when skinned) are these. The drop rate for the Black Broodlings is really low, so I use farm the Black Wyrmkins, Black Dragonspawns and Black Drakes. At my lvl I can't solo these dragons, so take at least a friend with you (tank!).

Drop rate without skinning is 0,7% or lower, with skinning skill it is about 15%, so you can expect one scale every 5 or 6 kills.

The best way to farm them is to join with someone who has picked up this quest. Just offer your help in exchange for the scales...

For the red ones, the best area is in the eastern part of Wetlands. The mobs that drop them can be found here. I went there with lvl 51, a warrior 49 and a Warlock 60 and it was still difficult to kill those mobs (at least lvl 56 elites!). We only got one in 20 min and killed 5 of them. Drop rates seem to be similar to the black ones. I will try to go there when I'm a least lvl 55.

So, i suggest you following:

- don't go there without a skinner (with skill around 300; I failed some attempts to skin the red ones with skinning skill 300!) :(
- try the black ones before
- drop rate of whelps or broodlings is too low
- if you're going for the chromatic cloak, don't hurry, you can't wear it until your're 57 and more important, you'll need 12 brilliant chromatic scales which are a rare drop from the chromatic dragons that can only be found in UBRS (or in AH starting at 20g each!). By the time you get these last ones, you will surely have the other ones.

Hope it helps :)

Ah it took a while but finally got my chromatic cloak yesterday (for a mere 10g tip!) and it's awesome. Thanks for all the info people. Found out that I could solo lev 60 elite red dragonkin which was quite a buzz (at lev 56 ... now 57). It took dam aages to farm those red dragonkin in the wetlands and always having to watch out for the big lev 62 elite one flying about was tricky. Must've spent most of a week farming. But for an epic cloak... it was worth it.

Grats, took me about 2 weeks to get stuff for Hide of the Wild, For anybody that is thinking about dragonfarming, Get a druid to help, If it gets harry , the druid can just sleep the bugger(never tryed the 62 eleite) but most of the dragons can be put to sleep and ya can take some time to bandaid, get some manna.... just much eazer fight when you can take a break.
