How do I get past 124? Everything I can smelt/mine is grey or green.
Who decided on a 50 pt gap in the progression?

start mining other things then copper.

Nobody made a gap. Start mining iron as well. E.g. Desolace is full of it.
You need to gain one more point of skill to get to mining Iron. So go find 2 or 3 tin nodes and you will soon be there ... look in areas with monsters around level 17 to 30 to find tin.
I have dropped and retrained mining on a character ... took me 10 hours to go from 1 to 250 skill ... enjoy the ride. If you are at lower levels then you will be limited by the monsters that surround you.

u can go to hillsbrad foothills, to the cave of the yetis, iron and others(tin, gold, mithril, truesilver, are some of the others) spawn in there, but mithril truesilver and probably even gold have a somewhat rare rate its mostly iron or tin most of the time, and theres usually 1-3 nodes in the cave, or to the highlands, usually quite a bit of iron around there

if you got to 124 then you can get to 125...mine the same stuff.
