Well you are more likely tro get shards from blue items. The different lvls of the items will determine which shard you get. (ie lvl 60 blues are large brilliant shards, but blues from say, SM will only be like small brilliant or radiant, glimmering etc)
For reference the "Green lens of XX" that engineers cna make will always disenchant into a Large Radiant shard.

The greens have a slight chance for a shard but they mostly give Dust and sometimes give essence

For Illusion dust (highest lvl dust) you want greens of lvl 50+ And go down in lvls for each type, ie Vision, Dream, Strange Dust. Strange dust is greens like lvl 0-15 or so.

Basically if you want shards, farm the appropriate lvl instance for the blue DOP drops from bosses. If you want greens then do the same, look for chests and stuff since they drop greens a lot. I.e. msot success will be in instances. Another trick for the lowbie enchanting is pickup tailoring and disenchant everything you make, that will give you a TON of strange dust, some essences and the occasional shard.

enchanting is quite the spendy little trade. I remember building up my warlock enchanter from mail sent over from my tribal leatherworker. My gad that was a long and spendy process.

Anyhow goodluck with it.

Welcome to the money sink called Enchanting! The best way to get mats for enchanting is sadly, just buy them from the auction house(AH). The best way to get mats for enchanting while "farming" is to run low level instances solo. A RFC(horde instance) will take you about 30 minutes to complete and result in about 20 green items to Dis-Enchant(DE). The down side of farming these low instances is, the mats you receive from DE'ing items, are the low level mats. Is 30 minutes of your time worth saving 1Gold(Average buyout price at AH) to you? It is only really worth farming for mats(imho) while you are still getting skill-ups from DE'ing items. Skill-ups stop at around 60'ish points. Just save the greed items, you collect, running instances your level. Byte the bullet and DE them if they don't sell at the AH. Most stuff sells for MORE gold than you will get by DE'ing it, but if you need the mats...
