Is there ever a point to leatherworking?Follow

#1 Sep 27 2005 at 8:05 AM Rating: Decent
I'm up to 238 in l/w, and chose elemental as my field, but I never use anything I can make and I always feel like I'm just grinding up leather that I could sell easier than the items I could make. I am 47 right now (rogue) and, looking towards end-game, it seems drops are all better, with the exception of the shifting cloak. I am seriously considering dropping l/w altogether and switching to enchanting, which would be more useful to me, I think. Any of you that are high-level leatherworkers that could give me some advice or thoughts?

Blizzard made crafting to create items that hold you over until you can get better drops. Naturally end-game drops almost always beat out what you can craft: because theoretically you could craft infinite numbers of BoE items, and then it would be worthless for people to run instances. The trade-off for crafting is that unlike instances, you don't need a group (most times) to gather the materials for them, and the items are relatively decent.

For example, in Tailoring, the Mooncloth armor is just a tiny bit under the Magister's set for Mages. But it is a lot easier to get Mooncloth items than it is to run instances if you can only play an hour or two a day!

My experience is only with Tailoring, but this is what I have found to be true. Still, I am not giving it up, as it is darn useful for my guild (bags!), I have three epic patterns (Flarecore), and I keep making myself useful items until I get better ones in instances (Mooncloth items). Also, I still want the Gloves of Spell Mastery and the Robe of the Archmage, so I'm keeping it for those as well :-D.

the only things that do beat out drops ar ethe rare end game epic crafts. like shifting cloak. the LW in my guild just got that to drop in DM. slowly working on ingredients for it so my hunter can have one *drool*

Tribal 300 and the only good thing I can say is the druid wildheart set is fugly as all hell (helm is ok) so I'll be sticking with the ironfeather mini-set I made and what good pieces I can find that look nice. I really do feel like I've wasted a lot of time on leatherworking and will probably start over on something else.

As a 300 level tribal leather worker, of several months, I still love it! As stated above, most higher level items you create are to hold you over til the really nice blues drop for you. That doesn't mean you can't make lots of money Leatherworking. It will change from server to server, so with a little work you can find the items that regularly sell for a good profit. Many mid level items actually have a very good profit! I can sell, on average, 10 wicked leather headbands at 3G each. Thats a profit of 15G from one item every week(Spend 15G on mats to make em). Not earth shaking, but it takes me 10 minutes of AH surfing and crafting, and that is only one item that I regularly sell. Another thing to note is that non-leatherworkers are also looking for some things to hold them over also(more profit). Once you finally get those eng game patterns, people bring you the mats and usually don't blink when asked for 20G to combine the items.
You probably can make more money in some professions, I know a few people who do(they have super rare patterns). Point is that leatherworking, if done right, is good money and constant money. I average about 100+Gold a week for about 1 hour of work(spread over the week) and rarly farming for materials. No, I don't have the ubber eng-game patterns, and yes I have paided 20G for combines, along with lots of other people I know.
PS. Enchanting, for the most part, isn't all that profitable! Yes, people make money doing it, but thet also spend hours a day in major towns, spamming trade channel to sell enchants. Why do enchanters ask for large tips? Cause they spent several thousands of gold getting those end-game enchants!! They need to sell hundreds of those enchants to start making money on them. As a level 300 enchanter I still have yet to make any profit from it. I have most off the end-game enchants myself, they sell poorly. Mostly becuase I don't waste my time intown spamming(I gave it up, hours and hours of wasted time for 2 or 3 sales a week).

meh elemental for rogues pays off more later on although the recipes are evil to get.... But I'm a 300 tribal leatherworker and there is ALWAYS a demand on my server for devilsaur stuff, not so much ironfeather but devilsaur sells like frikkin crazy. A good elemental item to make and sell is helm of fire those sell well.

i agree with nekar about enchanting..as i approached 265+ range and didn't want to burn mats on myself anymore, i realized i wasn't one of those players who likes to sit in big towns calling out what enchants i can do and waiting, hoping for someone to want one..and that he'll want it at my price and not the other enchanter on at the time.

so it's good for others..not so much for me.

LW on the other hand, depending on your class, you should be able to solo devilsaurs, frostsaber animals, chimeras, birds (for ironfeathers), ironfur bears, etc...

you may need help on the dragon scales but there are dragonkin from lvl 40-60+ which you may be able to get the scales you need.

even the shadowcat hides, which seem to drop rarely for me, can be soloed.

for the essences which you need for elemental LW, most of them you can solo also.

if you could make the best gear then people wouldn't focus on instances so much. so don't give it up because you can't make the best gear. keep doing it because you can make better gear than what drops from lvl 1-55 or so, and when you find a good item, you can make it constantly.
