When I'm just trying to level up, I pick the recipes that use the smallest amount of materials that are at the "orange" level for me, and avoid the ones that use leather, flux, gems, or any of those other expenses (since I'm a miner, I don't consider metals expenses). Early on it was copper bracers, went through a few other items, right now (125) it's rough bronze leggings. You can read through the blacksmithing tradeskill page (selected on the left here) to pick the appropriate recipes to learn.

Good luck...

You will find as you get higher that it becomes very difficult if not impossible to level up without buying some other materials, flux, leather, green dye, coal etc. For some of the items (if you have a good guild) you can arrange to trade or even give for free items which may help each other as we do in my guild i.e. leather etc. I found that by buying green die from a taylor at a cheap price (coppers) was a very effective way of leveling up. But its not easy and yes the best way is to look for the recipes that use the fewest common ingredients. also look out for plans in the auction house. The plan for Iron Shield Spike would help. Hope this helps

Like the above posters explained it is all about the items that require the least amount of materials! I know I used mithral spurs and some of the bracers for quite a bit. You can usually lvl up with items even after they are yellow. Stay away from items listed as green as it takes too many of them to lvl. Some items you will want to craft either for personal use or for AH to help recoup some of your losses on mats you need. Keep your eye out on the AH as sometimes you can get real good deals on metals. I bought about 6-10 stacks of Thorium for 2G a stack and then again for 3G a stack from the same person selling at AH. It came in handy when I was getting the plans for the imperial plate set and then to make my set. I maxed out my BM at 300 around lvl 54 and my mining at lvl 56. Problem for me now is my axesmith and dark iron tribute but should be able to get it done soon. If you wait until you hit 60 it will be easier for you as you can get more gold and are able to farm more efficiently to get materials to craft your items. Good luck!
