Gnomish Death RayFollow

I'm thinking of going engineering. Question is for me is I really want this GDR. Can a human mage make it once he has the level needed in enginneering?

Yes, they can make it, and everything an engineer makes they can then use, except guns/scopes. In fact, you don't even have to be an engineer to use the death ray... if that's the only thing you're really after, find a guildmate to make one for you. Of course, engineering has all kinds of other strange items at their disposal.

I just checked my ray and it doesn't take engineering to use but it's soulbound the moment you make it. So you'd have to get 240 in engineering and have picked gnomish engineer at one point in time.

Nope, unless its changed in the last couple weeks, its BoE, not BOP, so nonengineers can still use it :P

BoP item Must have 240 engineering to do it. That is the main question when choosing Gnomish versus Goblin for most people. Do I want the Death Ray or Dragon Gun. Both are exclusive to each other via the requirement for Self Made device by the appropriate engineer.

If it was BoE... everyone would have one. And I would be rich...

IT binds as soon as you make it. ONLY the person who made it can use it. And by definition, if you can make it, you are of the right type of engineering (Gnomish) and you have an adequate level to use it. ONLY Gnomish engineers of at least skill level 240 can EVER use this device.

There are other devices that can be made and sold/given which ALSO require engineering skill. This is one of the poor things about engineering. It is essentially a self only profession. It is costly and you have little way to recoup your costs. But there is nothing like chasing that Shaman with the flag, you already have burned Sprint, and hitting the 'Net-O-Matic' and rooting him in place long enough to catch up and take him down.

Or being rooted yourself against a spamming druid, pulling out the Death Ray and taking him down.

Or being ganked by a higher level horde and using the mind control cap and sending him into his own guards.

Or dropping a grenade in the middle of a bunch of people who have ganged up on an ally. Stuns them for 3 secs, does 300 or so damage to them all, and allows your guy a chance to get out of Dodge.

Or using the Goblin Rocket helm on one higher level 'Guard' as he helps out a buddy your level. Then proceeding to kill the buddy right in front of him while he is helpless. Vanish... and you are gone.

Engineering is great in so many ways... But it is almost always self only. Alot of the things can be made by other engineers for you. And you can use alot of the things from the 'Other' engineering school. ie Goblin Rocket Boots and Goblin Rocket Helm. But you DO have to have an adequate level in Engineering to use them.

There are a couple things you can use that you don't need engineering. EZ throw dynamite can be used by anyone. EZ throw II has a level requirement, 30 I think. But NOT engineering requirement. You can also use the SpyGlass or whatever it is called.

ummm, you sure, I know of folks who leveled engenrign to 240 made death ray and droped engenering, yes that is a odd condion. but when i see the word ONLY in caps like that, you make such a stand that I feel obliged to respond. Had you comment been "ONLY Gnomish engineers of at least skill level 240 can EVER make this device" I would have moved on.

Well, now that you mention it, I hadn't thought about whether it would work if you dropped Engineering after making it. It doesn't actually have an engineering level, so my previous statement was in error in that 'perhaps' there is no engineering requirement in order to use it after you have made it.

The requirement stems in being able to make it in the first place. In order to make it you have to be Gnomish and 240 skill. Perhaps this is truly one of the things that could be made and still used after dropping engineering. I have never actually heard of anyone dropping engineering and still having and using the Death Ray, but that doesn't mean there are none.

So, in reference to my earlier post. You still have to make it yourself, be Gnomish, and at at least skill level 240. My error might have been in the statement requiring skill 240 to continue using it. If anyone has first hand knowledge of this, it would be appreciated. Most of the other upper level engineering devices require a level, but there is no level requirement on this one.

Yes I do have first hand knowlage, the folks who did this are in my guild, the same rouge alos has "Smoking Heart of the Mountain" and then droped enchanting(thats silly IMHO) and took alchemy/taylring for transmutes/mooncloth. It is a heck of a path to take, but when ya hit 60 ya got plenty of time for such endevors.

That's odd, I swear one of the guildmates had a Death Ray and it said "Bind on Equip." He'd dropped Engineering but still used his Death Ray... said it was really fun to use and even funner to see an ally use it and then have it backfire and crit them for 4000 :D

I've never had my death ray backfire ON ME...When it backfires it just doesn't work.

Being a healer of some type is beneficial to the use of the GDR, Power Word Shield works great for Priests, and Rejuvination also works for Druids, Not sure if Mages mana shield absorbs DMG from GDR. Other Classes with a larger HP pool can deal with the DMG and hit a health pot or Band-Aid.
