I realize there are a billion threads about armoursmith and weaponsmith so I thought I would save the trouble of asking that question. I was curious to know the advantages and disadvantages of each weapon. I was leaning towards Swordsmith but I am really undecided because I am completely ignorant on this topic.

I would say quite honestly pick that which you would use, look at the end-game results from each field of weaponsmithing, which do you want most? Now go work towards that and be extremely satisfied when you get it.

Here's a dumb question, but I have yet to find the answer. I'm a weapsmith now (about 270) and want to go swordsmith, is there a quest I need to do to secialize in swords, and if so how do I start it?

You get the quest from a guy in Everlook. There is the mace, axe and sword guy all in the same building. They will give you the quest you need to specialize in the way you want to go.
