What level/fishing skill is needed to catch Stonescale eels?

Its not the fish that required the skill its the zone. the best place to catch Eel is steemweele port in Tanaris, and you need around 225-250 range to catch successfully there.

I don't remember exactly, but I'd guess at 225+.

That definitely is the best spot to catch them. If your skill is 181 I would suggest doing 1 of 2 things:

1) If you're in a guild w/ a lot of higher level players ask them for donations of Night Crawlers (+50 fishing for 10min IIRC). They drop very frequently in the plague lands... heck I know I have a stack of them in the bank.

2) If you have an engineering friend have them make you a stack of fish attractors (+100 fishing for 5min IIRC). Again, very cheap mats and will give you plenty of fishing boost.

By the time you're done using either of these for a while (assuming you have a stack of either) you won't need them again as your fishing skill should be high enough (around 225) after finishing a stack. You can always break inbetween and do the artisan quest (if you're over 40).

If you are alliance and on a PvP server, go fish em at Fethermoon Stronghold. (right next to the town)
Waaaaaay less chance of getting ganked.

I found better catch rates when i fished for eels at overlook clift in Hinterland. And its rather safe too.

Always use bobblers (as they are commonly known on our server)

300 fishing, +25 Pole - always using the Aqua +100. If decreases the 'fish got away' 'nothing was hooked' chance, also you will find areas where a base of 325 is not high enough and where Stonscales will be fighting to get on your hook.

If you fish always carry a stack of the best baubles you can find/buy/make. You never know where you might end up :)

I've been fishing in Steamwheedle Port off and on for the last week or so. I started out with around 225 skill (had just finished the artisan quest), I had the Strong Fishing Pole (+5), and I used Nightcrawlers (+50/10 minutes). At 280 total skill, I was still missing occassionally (maybe 1/5 casts). Once I got to 290 skill (235 base), I never missed again.

I think Stonescale Eels have a 100% catch rate once you get to 290 skill. 100% as in you'll never lose your catch. I did infrequently catch Eels before 290 skill, but only one, maybe two. Now I'm at 265 (base) and I've only caught about 15 more ^_^; I guess the rate just isn't high for them! Oh well, I've fished up clams with three black pearls... come on, golden!

Woot! My first post. Yeah, I know. Big deal.

Anyways, When I got to 150 fishing I swam to Booty Bay, bought my book and several stacks of baubles. I then decided to see just how much further I could swim safely. Turns out, I got bored before I ran out of places to swim to. But along the way I found a spot that seemed to work out nicely for me skill gain wise. It also happened to be a hotspot for Stonescale Eels. I swam all the way around the southern point of the continent up to the point where I entered the South Seas. At that VERY spot, right at the time the zone messsage comes up, there is a little shelf that you can get onto with a little effort. Zero monster spawn.
The minimum fishing here is 200. Not only did I pull up alot of skill points (225 skill in less then 3 hours), I pulled up no less then 50 of both Firefins, Oilies as well as Sturdy Locked Chests(4 in a row!! Is that record?), Big Mouth Clams(3 Iridescent Pearls and 1 Black)and the Summer Bass were in full run. As well as 25+ Eels. Maybe swimming isn't your prefered method of getting to this spot but considering I was level 18 when I did this, I think I did rather well.
Oh, as long as you stay a bit off shore and swim AROUND the large island at the very south, its totally safe to swim there as well.
[EDIT] I was level 18 when I found the spot and fishing with 150 skill and baubles. I returned to the spot once getting to level 20 and using my book and going on the skill gain spree. It was about 45% successful casting with only 150 skill and +80 from the baubles and my strong pole. At that rate, I found fishing better elsewhere. Sorry for any confusion.
