Engineering profitable itemsFollow

#1 Jul 18 2005 at 3:27 PM Rating: Decent
Can anyone comment on profit making techniques for engineers? I heard a few people talk of some guns that sell for a decent amount of gold, like the Flawless Arcanite rifle. Are there many such items?

In my experience the engineering items are mostly for your own consumption rather than sale. Those that do sell well falls into 3 areas: the single purchase high value items, the consumables and the quest items. I'd recommend doing all of those listed as skill allows and assuming you can get access to materials and schematics.

High value
Dark Iron Rifle
Flawless Arcanite Rifle
Green Lens

Consumables
Thorium Shells

Quest items
Gyrochronatom (1)
Advanced Target Dummy (1)
Hi-Explosive Bomb (8)
Unstable Trigger (8)

strangly the way i am able to make alot of money is through vendor trash. iron grenades take 1 iron bar 1 heavy powder, and one silk cloth. this can make between 2-4 nades and 1 stack of ten sells for 50 silver to vendors. my brother and i had a contest at who could make more in a day. i was only able to put up my 97 gold to his 102 gold =/ still a crapload of money. the thing i wont tell u is where to grind, you are going to have to figure that out on your own

Morthandeus has it figured out,

I will add a mith casing to the list of quest items(a-Me) and a deadly blunderbuss(only horde want this for a quest in Splintertree)

out of the hight valure sellers, the green lense is the only one realy worth cranking out, it is actualy a medium value item, the 2 rifles would sell for 4-5 times as much as a green lense(essentaly a shard)

Their is some money to be made in the lower level of shot too,not alot but when you have to make a big stack to level engenering, selling the bullets dosent hurt, ussualy nobody wants em till gyroshot, but some folks are weird, and they will take any thing that is better than they can use at their current level) Their is quite a bit of money to be made in Discombobulator rays(plans drop off thermplug) as anybody can use them. Since the advent of EZ-Throw II i see more non engeneers using explosives, so they are ok money too.

mongoloidrocker Also has the last part figured out, morth forgot the last catagory,Vendor items i think iron grenades have the best cost/retrun value, I bought my hunters mount with only selling grenades to the vendor next to the forge.

good job all, verry good awnsers.

Man...Flawless arcanite rifle is a pain the ***. Mats are freaking expensive and poeple dont buy it because, when your lvl is high enouph, all u do is instances run and you get from them almost as good or better crossbows/bows and guns.

lost a bloodfang chestpiece by one dp yesterday >< such a sad day....

That's for the input folks. =)

I've worked out the cost, value, and profit for some of the items mentioned here based on the median prices on allakhazam. All numbers are in silver and per item (i.e. each gyroshot, not a stack). Obviously prices vary per server.

The price for green lens is based on the overall average since there are many median prices depending on the random buff (some, like +24 sta or +24 int are VERY profitable). Also, cost for iron grenade varies depending on if u get 2-4 so i used the average of 3 grenades per production and the value for the iron grenade is the vendor buy price (since everyone mentioned vendor trashing it).

Item Cost Value	Profit
Mithril Gyroshot	0.2375	0.25	0.0125
Iron grenade 4.67	5	0.33
Bronze tube 3	25	22
Mithril tube 60	83.33	23.33
deadly scope 275	300	25
Ornate Spyglass	69	100	31
Mithril casing 60	100	40
Deadly blunderbuss	22.35	75	52.65
sniper scope 265	475	210
Green Lens 734.5	966.87	232.37
Discombobulator ray	89	375	286

ok thats in silvers right it has to be and oh yeah i find i can grind iron (also am not gonna tell u where) but that if u get a stack of 20 iron bars when u mine it u'll get atleast 20 heavy stone so if u do that and if u get ur silk that actually would be a great way to make money... and when u can grind mith i believe yeah u always get 3 mith frag bombs... one sec gotta think nope not worth it u need mithril casings
yeah irongrenades r teh way to go unless u buy ur silk for more then like 50 s for 20 now that i think about it though well im gonna grind silk (as best i can any way and im definetly grind on sum lev 26ish might get sum silk but ill do it for wool... great way for rep i hear

This is all really good to know. I am currently at 169 with Engineering on my Level 22 warrior. I have spent a lot of money trying to get materials, such as Heavy Stone, because I am not high enough level to get them on my own. Currently, with my mining at 124, I can not mine iron, which makes it very difficult to level up Engineering on my own.

This will help save me a lot of time hopefully. I had originally planned on going and farming copper, tin, and (if i could find enough) silver, to replenish my money supply.

However, I have found that explosive sheep (about the only thing that I can make at the moment that always gives a skill up) sell for 10s at the vendor. I have not compared the prices of everything else, such as the med leather, so I do not really know the profit. But it is very helpful if you are working on skilling up, and you find yourself needing a bit of money. I have found that selling any kind of explosive (if you get the ingredients on your own) really helps out at the lower levels. It is a nice way to gain money early in the game.

spec trose first off mine like one more tin vein and ull get the required 125 mining for iron it helps

First off, if your mining skill isn't being improved by smelting then stop using your own supplies. You can save significantly by selling the unrefined ore and buying bars. Ore sells at a premium to bars (precisely because people can level off smelting them) so you can make money off that premium by selling ore and buying bars. If you don't believe me, then try selling your blasting powder instead of the stone it came from... you're less inclined to buy the powder itself because you can level your skills by making it yourself. Conversely, buy powder if you don't need to level off of the stones and sell the powder (cheaper than the stone equivalent) if you don't need it for recipes.

Dude, selling sheep for 10s is not a viable money making strategy since it costs approx 29s to make one.

I'm trying to level according to my efficent leveling guide: =)

So the time regarding explosives was very good to know. Since a lot of the explosives that are low cost can yield a lot of levels. In some cases you can get a bunch of levels and still break-even financially if you buy the mats at AH, level up by building explosives, then sell explosives to vendor. This is particularly true with iron grenades which can even work out to be profitable (though only very slightly) if you get lucky consistantly making at least 3 grenades at a time.

Well i done that, but at the time of spending so much money, my mining skill was still significantly lower than needing just one more tin. I have since gotten the Gatherer mod to help me out with mining. Unfortunately my biggest problem comes from locating Iron. I went to duskwood to look, because i could actually remember seeing a deposit in an area with no enemies. At level 23, there are not many places that I can go to get any iron.

As for selling Ornate spyglasses, I have not seen them sell very well in my realm. I saw one person selling one (the only one up for auction at the time) for about 10s.

I did, however, see that Fused wiring was selling for at least a gold, and wondered if making/destroying target dummies, or buying cheap ones on the AH (saw one selling for under 10s), would be a good idea...

Now this could just be a mattr of luck, but I found that I got way way way more fused wireing when deploying them in The Hinderlands than i did when deploying them in IF, Luck?,Chance? who knows, but it may be worth a try .

I've found ornate spyglasses sell pretty well. The mats are expensive tho so it's kind of a gamble if you don't sell your spyglass. I usually keep one on me anyway for BG to scope out where our flag is if they have it at their base on the roof or something. You just need to keep trying and advertise it a bit cuz it's not a very liquid item.
