I'd really look at any other characters that you have on the realm, then you can decide easier. I mean I have 2 of each class (1 as horde 1 as alliance since they are equal, cept for shaman and pally, 2 on the proper alliances).....very long hours lol and I have 1 hunter as a herb/alch, because the other alliance on that realm are different professions. My other hunter, who is horde plays as a skinner/leatherworker because he will use that more and my warrior is miner/blacksmith and my shaman is miner/engineer. So really i'd just look at your classes, what other proffessions you have on that realm as that alliance. Also look at what you would need the most...

Skinning seems to be the best profession for a hunter for it doesnt come with a "detect" skill, just skin all the beast you kill (which is a lot). I am a hunter too, and as a hunter we got so many detect skills (humanoids, beasts, undead, elemental, giant, hidden, etc.). It is foremost one of the best skills we have to keep as from harm, and makes us train a lot easier for we know where the mobs are rather than rotating the camera to see what is around us. It is always best to get a profession which doesn't conflict with this skill.

2nd profession? hmmm... leatherworking. But, I'd go for mining especially if your level is high enough to kill everything around you with great ease. I dropped my leatherworking 245 when i was level 40, and took up mining to feed my alt-char, a warrior taking up axe-smithing/engineering. It seems to work pretty well.

Now, hunter level 50, skinning 300 / mining 220. warrior level 40, axe-smith 240 / engineering 260.

You should definitley do Leatherworking because then you can make equipment you can actually use. And it becomes very profitable higher up

Leatherworking is horrid.

You'd be money ahead to sell the skins you skin, then buy leather items other people made from the AH while also selling herbs or mined items.

On established servers, there is little point to take part in a trade that 15,000 people on the server already are performing (unless you are only doing it for fun.) Instead, those 15,000 other players are going to be buying materials for that trade:

From you.

I'd say go collection all the way, skinning is very good for a hunter due to tracking and the zero downtime of having a pet as part of your character. Besides skinning, I'd add either mining or herbalism; on my server there are fewer people looking for herbs than mines, so it is more lucrative (when selling them on the AH.)

You can make a billion times the money just with two collection skills, then buy whatever the heck you want.

Engineering is better due to exactly what natsuko said. Most of the engineering items can only be used by engineers, so things like dynamite, jumper cables, parachute cloak, etc. will only be available to you if you skill up that trade. Whereas leatherworking items can all be purchased.

The only problem with engineering is that it's quite expensive to level up. Many of the higher level schemata take fused wiring, which is either a super-rare drop in Gnomeregan, or drops off of mechanical combat pets and target dummies. They also use a lot of metal, stone, and gems.

I use a mod called "Gatherer" ( http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod/ ) to keep track of where I've found mineral veins in the past when I have to have another tracking skill up, otherwise I just group with my husband's rogue, who has a sharper eye for resource nodes than do I. :)
