i am a 37 rogue on skywall, and i need a question answered. i know the most common second profession learned along with enchanting is tailoring, but i have tried to keep enchanting and skinning on my main and leathercrafting/tailoring on my alt. however, i am now rethinking this decision. i'm having a hard time keeping a supply of items to disenchant from regular grinding and it is difficult to level my alt to the appropriate level so i can make higher-level items to DE. so, i think i have a few choices:

1) abandon leather and tailoring on my alt. instead, take up tailoring on my main.

2) abandon leather on my alt. pick up engineering or blacksmithing instead. on main, abandon skinning and pick up mining. send mined mats to alt. (ive heard very good things about the prospects for making money with mining from a few people on my server).

3) abandon tailoring on my alt in favor of skinning. pick up tailoring on my main.

4) abandon leatherworking on my alt for a miscellaneous proffession. abandon skinning on my main and take up herbalism instead. (as a rogue this could come in useful, but can it make money?)

so, id very much appreciate some insight as to the pros and cons of any/all of the above ideas. thanks!

Enchanting in my opinion is really gonna work best on a alternate toon where your main is in the higher lvls (50+). My alt is Chanting/Tailoring. I have my main farm what my alt needs so I have been able to cap my chanting and tailoring pretty quick after I get the next lvl in either profession.

As for you I am a bit confused as to why you would want to have one toon have chanting and skinning and another have leather and tailoring. Were I in your situation I would drop skinning on your main and take up tailoring, and drop tailoring on your alt and take up skinning, I know that you are losing lvls on the front side, but in the long run I think it will serve you better in the long run. Espically when your alt gets up in leather and is ready to pick a leather path. So I guess thats option 3.

As for option 1, I'm not sure what your alt is, but if he is another rogue, druid, or hunter, you will prob wanna keep leather because you will probably need it in the long run. I got conned into doing herbalism/alchemy with my Rogue, and while I am not totally unhappy with the result at lvl 300 alch, I sometimes feel a pang or regret when I need new armor.

Option 2 looks alot like your current situtation, ideally you want to have 2 complementry professions (ie: herbalism/alchemy, enchanting/tailoring, blacksmithing/mining, engineering/mining, leatherworking/skinning), I personally dont see a advantage to say having blacksmithing on a alt and having mining on a main.

Option 4: Again I dont see the advantage to having tailoring and anything else BUT enchanting, and I dont see the sense in having a chanting/herbalism combo.

It kind of looks like you may have made a uninformed decision when you choose your profs, I know I did with my very first char (mage - mining/blacksmithing). It also looks like you put alot of time into chanting and tailoring I would guess you are probally 225+ in both, if thats the case I would suck it up and probably drop the tailoring on your alt (since it will be far easier in my opinion to get back up) and drop skinning on your main and get tailoring. As for your alt it evaluate what class he is and what would go good as far as profs go (ie: Druid - Leather/Skinning or Herb/Alch).

Another option is always pure profit for your alt which is 2 gathering profs like skinning/mining.

Anyways thats my 2 coppers worth, good luck with whatever profs you choose

alright, thanks a bunch. i asked about the mining because a couple of enchanters took up mining on their mains purely for profit. my alt is a 20 mage, and i dont really see myself levelling it past 40.

originally, i was skinning/leather on my main, but a guildie convinced me to switch to enchanting + a gathering skill. i stuck with skinning b/c it was what i knew.

i really hate the way you cant level more than two proffessions, but i see the logic in it; dont want a few buttheads to rule the entire server. thanks again for your insights. it is likely that i will go clothcraft on my main. and if not clothcrafting, then i will go with mining purely for profit's sake.

Yeah I understand the point of not having 2 many profs, but I remember the good ole' FFXI days with Wood/Alch/Blacksmith/Goldsmith, it was nice to be able to make everything you needed on your own. But differnt game different economy. Anyways good luck to you.

As you can see from my signature, I have a bad case of the alts. I love craft skills, which is one reason why I was inspired to play so many alts. My main character is my rogue. He has skinning and mining. In many ways this has worked out well for me. He can supply leather, metal and cloth to my alts. However, I had the same problem you’ve encountered. To max out a profession you have to be at least level 35. And if you are planning to go into the specialty branches of some professions, such as leatherworking, I believe you have to be at least level 40 if not higher. My tailor / enchanter is my dwarven priest. Unfortunately I found playing a priest didn’t fit into my solo play style as well as I had hoped. Where as I’ve enjoyed leveling my rogue and now my hunter, getting my priest to level 35 was work. But it’s paid off. I’ve not leveled his enchanting much past 130, but his tailoring is now 300 and he can make mooncloth bags and such.

If you are happy with your current setup with your professions then I would suggest its time to bite the bullet as it were and level up your mage. Place your rogue in a comfortable inn someplace and pull on a set of robes. You only have 15 levels to go to reach your goal. Get into a spell casting mind set and level up that mage. You should be able to blast and sheep your way to 35 in a reasonable amount of time.
