Enchanting questionFollow

I have read several posts now that Enchanting is very expensive early on. However, I have not read any explanation why it is so expensive? I am considering making an alt char that does Enchanting and would really like to know why it is so expensive? Thanks all!

Starting at level 1 with enchanting kinda screws your character (I know I did it), since you disenchant alot of your greens to get components to train your enchanting and don't make much money back until around 225. I spent alot of my time not having enough money to train and what not so eventually (around 200 skill) I dropped it in lieu of Engineering.

After 60 levels, I picked enchanting back up... it is not so bad now cause I have the ability to get the greeens I need.

If you are going to do enchanting, you should wait till after level 40 to start. By then your ability to get the items to train is more than sufficient and the cost of the skill is offset by your ability to make more money.

When all is said and done, you will spend about 100-400gp to get your skill to 275, and another 100-400gp to get those last 25 points (100gp if all you do is farm greens for skill, 400gp if you pay premium prices from AH). If you are willing to spend the time, you can make alot of that back after you get to the glowing enchants, chest stats, and +5 Stamina/Int/Agi/Str bonuses. These numbers are before you offset the cost by selling enchants.

Up until two days ago I was a Tailor/Enchanter.

The really enchanting is so expensive is because of your components: to get them you need to disenchant. To disenchant, you need green+ equipment. What stinks is that (if you're disenchanting green armor, the most common green items for a Tailor), you'll get dust most of the time, and occassionally essences. However, you need to make items solely to disenchant. This gets to be very expensive.

Then, for the first 200-225 levels (this is hearsay), you won't make much, if any, money off of these enchants. Because every mage/warlock/priest is probably doing the same thing; and they cut each others' throats to just cut their losses in half. I know I didn't sell a single enchant for the 140 levels I was an encahnter; because everyone else would lower their prices to make sure their enchants sold :-/.

There is a good guide on enchanting for less, but take it all with a grain of salt. The recommendations don't tell you that you'll need to farm a ton of cloth for your tailroing greens that you'll end up disenchanting. While this is less expensive than wastefully leveling enchanting, you could make soooo much more by selling your cloth or AHing the greens. Also, some suggestions like selling Minor Beastslaying for 1 gold is totally server-dependent. On my server, it hovers between 30-40 silver. Better than nothing, but... ouch...

I eventually gave up enchanting for mining; and just by getting it to level 190, I've made over 20 gold. I'm quite happy with my choice :-). But don't let me hold you back; just take into account that you won't be getting income from cloth nor random green/blue drops. This is where I got almost all of my money as a Paladin; think carefully; is it worth it to be poor for 45-50 levels, to not get your mount until you're almost 45, just to have a few worthwhile enchants at level 50+? I decided it wasn't; you may decide it is.

Thanks for the info. Luckily my main is a hunter with mining/skinning as her primary professions, so my Enchanter will just funnel funds from her when needed. Thanks for the help all.

If you are really intrested in doing enchanting then don't start with a lvl 1 main char. Probably one of the better things to do is get get your main at a decently high lvl (say high 40's to 50's) and then supply your alt Enchanter with most of the stuff that they will need.

For example: My lvl 50+ Rogue can solo the Deadmines, Stockades, BDF, Orc Camps, SM ect... Generally I can come out of the deadmines with 20 or so nonsoulbound green items which I will send to my alt tailor/enchanter along with all the cloth I picked up. I kid you not, by the time I hit lvl 10 I was capped at both tailoring and enchanting until lvl 20 (my alt mage is now lvl 21 and halfway capped on both Tailoring and Chanting).

Another advantage of having a high lvl toon do all the work for you is that you can pick up some pretty kick butt armor/weps for the alt. When you can solo a instance there is no need to share or roll the drops. Anyway that has seemed a pretty effective way to get to 225 in tailoring and chanting.

There is a pretty good guide on getting to 225 btw (I really dont know why this isnt a sticky in this forum but it is in the guides section):

I too have a main that's supplying funds to my ALT and got lucky finding an easy way to do it. Just for fun I went into Gnomeregan alone and walked out a couple hours later with a couple stacks of linen and wool (which helped my ALT's 1st aid quickly) but more importantly with about ten green items.

The best part is there was no competition and the deeper into the instance I got the mobs made for some intense and enjoyable gameplay.

disenchant soulbound and sell non-soulbound items up to lvl 45 then after that go for really boosting the enchanting skill

if it's your alt...enchanting can get you alot of money from level 1.

what's key here is you don't have to have a certain skill or level to Disenchant anything ;)

i had to figure it out myself, and i'll let you do the same, but when the market's good, i can make usually 7 to as much as 10g profit off disenchanting a mid-40 level weapon.

Without having spent more than 30-40 gold on AH supplies, I've managed to level up Enchanting to 272 so far with my rogue, just using DE'd components. I occasionally make a run into places like Shadowfang Keep or the Scarlet Monestary for greens and BOP blues. It wasn't expensive for me at all.

I started out with my very first character lvl 1 enchanting/tailor. I'm now lvl 46 and I have about 40 gold. I am a warlock so I got my mount via a quest and frankly, I haven't had much problem leveling up (of course I have an amazing guild backing me up). I am a lvl 272 enchant today and am finally starting to make a little gold from it. I think it's been extremely challenging and rewarding and I would recommend it only to those who can really handle being poor for awhile :)
