I used to have engineering, but I dropped it. Most of the things that you can make with it, require you to be an engineer to use, reducing the amount of money that you can make in the AH from items you make. Blacksmithing on the other hand, does not require you to be a blacksmith for you to use the items that can be made.

I hope this helps.

I've found Engineering to be very helpful with bombs, dynamite, trinkets, headwear etc. Most items are for your own characters use or the very rare sale to another engineer (usually Goblin <--> Gnome exchange). If you want to make money you are probably better off using blacksmithing.

To make money you're better off getting another gathering profession. Neither blacksmithing or engineering make much of a profit.

Skinning is always a good money maker to go with mining. I took it up simply because you have to kill beasts to level up, so why not just skin them when they're dead. It takes little effort to level, and make money because you don't have to do anything that takes away from gaining xp. Plus, if you solo a lot, you never have to share the skinning.
