Leatherworking ...to dragonscale or not to dragonscaleFollow

#1 Apr 27 2005 at 10:41 AM Rating: Decent
I am level 46 and 254 leatherworking. I am still trying to decide which direction to take my leatherworking. I have been trying to find something that is solid pros and cons of each. And I know as a Shaman Dragonscale would be the way to go. I currently wear all Turtle Scale. I have 2876 AC and 3010 Mana. But, looking at the dragonscale stuff that's out there, I don't see anything that really makes me want to go out and get this stuff. At least with the turtle scale I get Intel, spirit, and stamina. The dragonscale I see here doesn't seem to incompass all of those traits that I like.

Any high level shamans out there that can give me some direction on this?

Thanks in advance.

Spirish,

I'm not a shaman but I am a high level leathercrafter and I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

There are three things to consider when choosing Dragonscale over Elemental or Tribal.

First consideration is looks. How would you like your Shaman to appear? If you'd like to have the look of a character bounding around in mail, the Dragonscale is an ok choice. But if you prefer the look of leather go with Tribal or elemental.

Second consideration, function. What are you looking for your armor to provide? Are you seeking a high damage resistance? Are you looking for more stat bonuses? Right now the best of both worlds is not offered. If you choose the stat bonuses of Tribal or Elemental you are passing on the damage
resistance provided to you by Dragonscale.

Finally, consider that most items that you buy at the Auction house or items that drop from creatures (such has the final hunter set) will provide higher armor and higher stat bonuses than any crafted item. With that in mind the only real factor is consideration number one, the looks.

I am a 48 tauren shaman and I have dragonscale...oofda...I -love- the idea of "Dragon Scale Armor". Man, that just sounds sooooooo cool. But I think Blizzard does not agree with the awesomeness of the idea. Dragonscales are not easy to find. Not at all. You can farm for hours and find nothing. Litterally zero output for your effort. I get most of my scales from AH because the 55+-60's kill Dragons all the time and just sell the scales for side cash. But it's the only place to find the stuff.

It is not for making money. You will never earn money by putting together a dragonscale suit. NEVER. If you can deal with that, go for it. Otherwise, find a different road to walk on.

Why I like it:
Mail: I just won't put on leather now.
Resistances: My goal is to get a solid 30-40+ resistance to everything...or at least the big 2 (frost and fire). This will help in PVP and the fire will help in the endrun instances.

60 Shaman here with Dragonscale Leatherworking.

It sucks, dont get it. I have plenty of scales from ubrs runs, but theres nothing worthwhile to craft at all. Dont be fooled, it is much more beneficial to take the tohers and craft gear rogues use and sell in Org or the AH.

59 Hunter with Dragonscale Leatherworking, yes I know it was not the most optimal choice, but I like killing dragons, =D. Anyways, like it has been said before, you can find better items that what you can make.

If you were to be a moneymaker from leatherworking, elemental is the way to go. Even Tribal would be better for selling than Dragonscale. The other two provide recipes for sets, which people like to buy. Dragonscale does not, at the moment, and thus those who take it do not financially prosper.

L60 Shaman w/dragonscale leatherwork. It doesn't pay off really. I have about 180 black dragonscales in the bank. I have only ever made two dragonscale items to date: A set of blue dragonscale shoulders, and a breastplate. I used both for myself until I replaced each with pieces of the elements set. I only got vest of elements tonight, so the blue bp lasted me over 2 months.

Chromatic cloak is a nice one to get to craft for mages/warlocks, the FR is crucial for the Ragnaros fight... But Heliotrope cloak isnt much behind it, which is *awful* considering the difficulty of Chromatic Cloak to produce.

There's also Onyxia scale patterns that aren't well understood yet, but, are presumably made exclusively by dragonscale leatherworkers.

The rest of the patterns are more or less junk, or overpriced to produce, or replaced by other better items quite easily.
