There are like 2 leatherworking patterns that require a bolt of cloth; none that require other items a tailor would make.
If you want to do leatherworking, skinning is almost a must. At low and/or mid levels you will go broke trying to be a leatherworking and buying
all your leather off the auction.
If you want to be a tailor, skinning is not a bad supporting profession. There are many patterns that require a piece or two of leather; and then you can sell your extra leather on the auction.
