Just a quick question here. My leatherworking skill is about 90 right now and im level 32, but the things i skin now drop all heavy and medium leather, so i have no recipes to use that kind.
Does anyone know at about what skill level you start using medium hides instead of light? Any help is appreciated.

I'd say around 100-120 is when you start moving from light to medium. Also around you should learn how to turn light hide into medium. I'd suggest running around a lvl 10-20 area and farming for light hide, since the lvl of the mob determines what kind of hide it drops.

I didn't know you could convert light hides to medium hides...I thought you could only cure hides. You can convert the leather though...maybe that's what he meant to say. Also, don't get discouraged when your skinning is up to 225 and your leather working is still stuck at 130. Skinning is probably the easiest of the gathering skills...since what you kill you skin, IMHO.

You are very correct... and I am sure that the Second poster ment that, the if you only get heavy and med leather, and you need light for your LW... the awnser is simple, go back and kill stuff that drops light leather.

I just hit 124 in Leatherworking, and this is where the Medium Leathers get very popular. Dark Leather Boots, Dark Leather Pants, etc. use 8-12 Medium Leathers per recipe. I'd reccomend level 12-16 beast mobs (such as the critters around Auberdine in Darkshore) to pick up 1-2 leathers per skin, if you're lucky. That should get you more than enough to get up into synthing medium leathers or cloaks and the like.

It is imposible to convert hides into the higher rank this is posible only for leathers. About leveling of leatherworking i will advise to return to your starting area or next to it and skinning the beasts there. So you will recieve a low quality lethers which you can use for leveling the skill.
P.S.: But the question is what did you do until this 30+ lvl so you'd not leveled yet? Maybe sleeping! LOL

You can gain skill with converting light to medium, or medium to heavy...ect but I believe the skills start out as green so it's not a good skill up. It's better to make armor kits until they are green as they usually only require 4 or 5 leathers and a thread or 2.

To the OP you start using Medium leather at 100, Heavy at 150, Thick at 200, Rugged at 250, then Core leather and Enchanted leather at 300. Some of the specialized leatherworking skills use weird leathers like Devilsaur leather or Dragonscales around 250 or so.

your character level is higher and your skinning kept up with the higher level mobs you killed.

now it's time to go back to lower level mobs to get more light leather so you can work up your leathermaking skills.

if you choose good spots, you may not even have to take time killing these animals. some people may be killing them already for you, just go and skin.
