The recently released PS3 in Japan can run many PS2 games. At this time, Final Fantasy XI cannot run on it; no PS2 games that utilize the hard drive can currently run on the PS3. This should be fixed in a future PS3 software patch. Details from an IGN report:

Games that use the hard disk will currently not run. The problem is that the built-in PS3 hard disk cannot currently be used as a PS2 hard disk. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but this means games like Final Fantasy XI and Nobunaga's Ambition Online won't work.

For now at least. The good news is that Sony plans on making hard disk based PS2 games compatible in a future system software update. The list of titles that will work once this magic system update is carried is basically just Nobunaga's Ambition Online, Final Fantasy XI and the Play Online viewer, and Front Mission Online in all their variations, including expansions.

-From somepage, but yeah, til the update for it FFXI, Nobunaga's Ambition and Front Mission Online won't run on PS3.

Just something I should mention, there is many games out in Japan that use the HDD directly for saves, certain IIDX games, I think FFX int. had it, and I think that these are the type of things that may be fixed when IGN talks about the softwear update, keeping this in mind when it comes to games running off of the HDD (POL/FFXI) hopefully they will include it inside their softwear update.

-edit-

dont forget that Sony also screwed SE over when they released the thin PS2's shortly after FFXI came out. and also did not sell the external HDD in america

They mentioned it right up in their article that Nobunaga's Ambition, Front Mission Online and FFXI would be part of the subject game list to be compatible for the update eventually, along with their expansions.

Of those 3 games listed, only FFXI made it to the US but the other 2 have been out maybe a yr or 2 and have a pretty good following. Also Front Mission is another SE game along with FFXI, even though Sony did drop support for the HDD games when they released the new PS2, it was mostly for costs against the lackluster sales of the HDD. I think SE will remind them that Sony owes a lot to them making the system what it is today cause of FF7, much like Halo is to Xbox.

The Hard Drive for the PS3 is built in and internal...still the base price is steep but oh well, ppl will still buy it, it'll still sell out just cause its a new system.

Yeah, I tried playing it on my PS3, but when you put the disc in it says "No HDD to install."

It'll be nice once that's sorted out, or maybe SE could port the 360 version over to the PS3.

Someone already got shot and killed for their PS3, and eBay's banned any auctions for the PS3, one even hit $14,000 in top bids.

eBay didn't ban PS3 auctions. There's at least 20 thousand on eBay as we speak being, almost one being sold every minute it seems.

Guess they let it go, unless they're canning the auctions at the end. Oh well...lol to those idiots who end up bidding on a box like what happened with the PS2 and 360. XD
