I don't know how many of you know me, but my character name is Bloodspirit, a 65 Red Mage on Shiva. I have decided, after much thought, to retire my Red Mage and start a new job. I don't have anything against Red Mage, it's just not fun for me anymore. When my choices are to get an experience party or log out and play EQ2, and I choose EQ2, something's wrong.

So, I've narrowed down my job choices to the following: Samurai, Monk, War/Nin, and Ranger. I can't for the life of me manage to pick one, so I'm looking for any advice or suggestions the Shiva community might have to offer. Specifically I'm looking for people who've played any of those jobs to tell me what they like and do not like about their jobs.

If anyone feels like helping me out, I'd appreciate it. If not, that's cool too.

Alright, from what I've seen and know and have experienced...

RNG - This job is crazy fun. Seriously. One shot killing very early (we're talking before level 5) is a great feeling. On the other hand...man, you better have money. Bows, Crossbows, Gun, arrows, bolts, and bullets? Those add up. Worth it if you have the means to do so.

War/NIN - I'm going to be completely honest and say I've never done this. Personally, I feel that WAR isn't that fun. But then, I'm also told that I'm doing it wrong (which I believe, because the guy who told me if the best tank alive)(ever)(I mean it). I know that it could definitely be helpful, and SKILLED blink tanks are always useful. Dual Axes are cool to see too.

Monk - There ain't no feeling like getting up close and personal with a monster and beating them to death with some Fruit Punches.

Samurai - Okay, this is my personal favorite aside from my main, but you have to put a little bit of time into this before it becomes really fun. Pre-30, you're a backup tank with a way cool sword. After 30, you get Meditate, which is God's way of telling you that it was worth it. Participating in 2-3 skillchains per fight? Performing the beloved self-skillchain at the end of the night?

Fun stuff.

Whatever you choose, man, enjoy it!

Basically it comes down to what type of person you are really. All of the jobs here can all cause some pretty kick a$$ damage and if played right can equally be very fun.

Monk - Right now this is my main. I love it. I like the idea that the mob was dropped cause of my fists rather than a bow or magic. You can cause some major serious damage without people not even really knowing it. Monks are DoT melee fighters. However i'm fast approaching level 40 and in case you didn't know that level becomes a huge money sinkhole for monks. Here are some of the recent prices for gear at that level (approx):

Jujitsu Gi 200k
Fuma Kyahan 280k
Sniper's Ring 650k each
Ochiudo's Kote 800k
Brown Belt 340k

These prices are from the last time that I checked for them which was a day or 2 ago. But i've heard from another post on here that a few of these items have dropped in price anywhere from 150-200k. I'm still at work right now so I haven't had the chance to log on at home yet and find out what the current prices really are. Some people are thinking that due to the up coming patch SE might be taking some measures against the gil selling situation that has infiltrated the game, the gil sellers are trying to make whatever money they can get right now for some of this stuff. So by the time you get to this level it MIGHT be a little cheaper for you.

Now you don't HAVE to get every item here. You can live without the kotes but they do help alot. The sniper rings you really don't need until about level 50. But by then you have access to the life belt so you could potentially pass them up entirely. The Jujitsu Gi and the Brown belt really are must haves though. If you are anything like me and want to live up to your full potential then plan on spending anywhere from 2.5 to 3 mil for this stuff depending on prices, NM camping, crafting or questing. Also from about level 50ish to about level 65ish (when you are wanted for leveling off of bones) expect to be waiting quite a while for a pt unless you have a static.

Samurai - I haven't ever played this job but i've seen what the damage that they can do post level 30. Javex is right...2-3 Skillchains per fight is very possible. Which makes EXP fly by all that much faster...and we all know how much fun that is. I have a Sam in my static and he whips out SCs left and right like there is no tommorrow.

As far as how this job plays out financially i'm not sure what it costs. I do know that they can get the Kotes at level 34 just like Monks do so thats always a big ouch.

Ranger - This is going to be my second job after i'm done with my Monk. My Ranger is still at level 1 so I have no personal experience playing it but i've seen the damage that they can do. Its either this or Black Mage as the job that causes the most damage in the entire game. Another positive thing about Ranger is that EVERYONE wants one in their pt. So no need about really waiting very long for a party.

The downside however is very common knowledge....money. At the higher levels a Rng/Nin is more commonly desired than Rng/War. Which means that you have to get Ninja to 37. Which isn't exactly cheap either. You need some serious bankroll to properly play Rng/Nin. Which is why i'm gonna do this after I get my Monk to 75. More money making options are available to me then.

Warrior - Warrior is probrably tied with Monk as the most underrated and underappreciated job out there. Its probrably due to the fact that its not an advance job so alot of people out there think that its only worthy as a subjob. In my opinion before level 37 Warrior is THE tank out there. With my Monk as my subjob I took Warrior to level 37...and man was that fun. A Warrior has the potential to be an awesome tank or an awesome damage dealer. You just have to know how to do it right and have the right equipment. IF you do decide on going with War/Nin use dual wielding axes BUT also keep your Great Axe skill capped seeing as how you get Sturmwind at level 23. Sturmwind is the best Weaponskill before level 33 out of any job there is.

Money wise your only main concern is really spending the money for your Ninja. Some of the armor higher up in the levels are pretty spendy though. At about level 50+ you are called upon more to be a damage dealer than you are to tank. But be ready for both.

What you may want to do is go to each of the respective forums and ask all the Monks, Warriors, Rangers and Samurais what some of the pros and cons of each of the jobs are. That way you can get first hand knowledge from some of the higer ups about what each job has to offer and what you can expect.

Hope this helps in any way and good luck with whichever one you choose.

Well, thanks for the input. It just occured to me that if I go with Rng I'll have to pull. Since I don't want to kill more than one exp party per week, I may want to avoid Rng. I've lately developed a tendency for accidentally pulling while playing Rdm. I think the death toll so far is somewhere around 8.

I think what I'm going to do first is put all of the money I'm getting from sale of Rdm gear into crafting to try to get to a point where I don't need to farm anymore. Then I'll most likely start Samurai, or maybe I'll bite the bullet and do Ranger. Those are the two frontrunners right now.

Again, thanks for all of the input... well, except for Cithon, who will be killed when I log in next.

I've started to lvl samurai (currently lvl 15) and have found that Samurai are pretty good with a bow and arrow. Combine with the weapon delay off of a Great Katana and you have a good 1-2 combo. Plus the extra dmg from the arrow increases your tp even more. The point being is I think its a awesome job. ^^ though I plan on switching to drg once I get sam to 40.

I wish you the best in finding fun in the game again.

Well I've played Ranger and Monk and loved them both.

Ranger is expensive but there is not much of a party wait.

Monk is fun and frankly the other day I did a BCNM with a lvl 75NIN/WAR and saw that at lvl 46 my HP was almost as high as his at lvl 75 and that is a rewarding feeling but you will often wait a while for parties.

well if your going to put your money into crafting.. and you potentially want to go ranger... why not dump it into woodworking and make your own bolts and arrows? That could be the most profitable craft you could take up considering your job choices. Even Sam's are good with a bow.

Well, for now the plan is to be a Ranger. Any money that doesn't go toward buying arrows or gear is probably going to be put into Woodworking. Now if only there was an effective and cheap food for Rangers to use. Mithkabobs don't affect Ranged Attack anymore. ><

Again, thanks for all of the suggestions. Though if I may make a suggestion of my own, if you see me lfg {Run Away!}. I'm still learning this whole melee thing. 65 Red Mage levels have totally ruined me. Smiley: grin

I may be reading into this wrong, but it sounds like to me your main complaint is the time spent lfg? If so, you may want to consider bst/rdm. Never have to lfg again, but if you want to join one you still can and are capable of outdamaging almost any other job depending on your pet. The way of the bst is challenging and rewarding. The all bst ls Lordsofthebeasts is always recruiting new bsts as well. Great stickies in the bst forum too...

all I got to say is /cheer for RexWalker, you da man. That is the absolute greatest thing about BST, log in and gain EXP for as long or as little as you want. And yes, our LS is recruiting always and the only requirement is be a Beast (and even that is not a "true" requirement, we have people who are not full time BST). Plus, it is not a money sink hole, it is actually a money maker.
