Man you're kidding me! I may not have played with Unctgtg on a regular basis, or did i even talk to him..But he helped me get a papyrus for G1! Besides that, he was real cool and told me some things about DRK. Even offered to help me again if needed (If he wasn't busy of course) That kinda sucks..One of the few peeps who are sick DRK's! Hope he's able to get this fixed, if it's true or not.

UNC had recently purchased the PC version of FFXI.

Apaprently he had also been infected with one of the new trojan keyloggers that steal MMO accounts ( CNNMOney recently had a report on how in many cases your MMO 'identity' is worth more to hackers than your 'real' identity in terms of cash value).

This person, apparently changed UNCs PW and sold a significant portion of his stuff.

UNC was able to get the account back on Sunday he said. Also he has not lost his Scythe, just a large amount of gil and currency he had been stock piling for his final upgrade. He also had several other items sold from his account.

Given that this is possibly a widespide threat, if the CNN article was right and the issue is thieves stealing accounts to sell for quick cash ( as seems to be supported by Shuffles comment), I would say that those who think this is funny, entertaining or otherwise comical stand a pretty good chance of getting to enjoy some fun first hand. For those who understnad the potential severity of this issue, I suggest you update any virus definitions you have been slacking on ASAP.

i had a chance to talk with unc last night, according to him all non r/e big money items were gone, all his jadeshells, pc charm, etc. totaling several hundred million. i only hope that he gets SE on the phone and can atleast track this stuff down, thats a big chunk of potential gil to hit the economy, enough imo for se to take notice.

Hello, I have read the thread at your LS forum and I have to say that I know Izembo and Meph a great deal and feel that they deserve to be banned from your forum. Those comments are unbecoming of them, it wont be funny if it happen to them and they would be angry if someone have them the same comments that they gave UNC.

Unc, I am saddened to hear this. You have been nothing but considerate and generous to me, with both time and advice you wouldn't give to just anyone. I'm only one little woodworker, but if I can help, say the word.

If thats true.. then damn you fail at life..

My concerns are that if they got your account info, they got at least 1 credit card number and all details accordingly. If I was in unctgtg's shoes i'd be worried about my IRL money over a fictional game. Dollars> gil ... With a credit card you can find out LOTs of things, like go to paypal if you have email address and credit card you can find out all you need to know about a person, address, social security #.. totally sux, SE should be helping you in this matter because this has liability written all over it. Im pretty sure that the liability waiver we all agreed to does NOT cover identity theft.

anyways, not a joking matter, we all seen the pic of unctgtg on ffplayers.com he looks like a pretty successful business man, dont want to see him end up in a hard place IRL...

Actually, it's a pretty simple thing. I don't think the guy who snatched his account, gained access to his Credit Card number. For instance, there are programs out there that do nothing but randomly sort thru thousands of numbers and letters. Basically, all you gotta do is enter a name, in this case UNCTGTG, click a button, and it will sit there untill it finds a match on a password, or an account number.

This technique is widely used through many websites such as Yahoo! Pogo, etc. I don't know what it's called, don't care to. I'm personally not the type of person who needs to "Hack" something. I just assume go earn my own stuff, rather then hacking em because i want some stupid game money! If that person really needs game money THAT BAD, here's my solution. I will give you 2 million gil to stand outside IRL, mind you, for 20 minutes and get some damn SUN!

#20 Aug 23 2006 at 8:06 AM Rating: Default
problem is that stupid game money is worth $100.00 per 10 mil to sell, so clearing out 100 million gil is a nice 1k real life profit.

Hmm, this is giving me an idea how to get vacation money >.>

lol! Offer was for 2 million for 20 minutes..You have overstepped your bounds! Now seriously, get back inside..FFXI is lonely! (I have to admit playing this game is more addicting then alcohol, but i still wouldn't take someones account.)

I believe it, I don't know from personal experience, but I would assume that it is much harder to prove a stolen MMORPG identity over identity theft. One can change their IP and/or credit card info on an account, nothing too suspicious. However, credit card theft would be by far riskier not only is it against federal law in the US, credit card companies, in this case Master Card has their protection and enough money to totally own you.

No program these days show your credit card info, from the server its always last 4 digits only, so it is unlikely that the thieves have his cc info, although I would still have all that info changed asap.

...no... NO.
I'm not a hacker but this is so unlikely it is disturbing that you would think this. I believe that the method you are implying is called "Brute Force." To log into FFXI you don't use a name (i.e. Unctgtg), you use a 4-letter 4-number generated pin and a random password of your choosing. For a Brute Force program to be able to sift through all of those bits of information and server requests to find an existing 8 character alone would be extremely difficult and then to generate a correct password, too, is damn near impossible, without thousand upon thousands of dollars worth of hardware. Even if they could manage to pull this off, they would have to get lucky enough to stumble upon an account worth any money at all.
Then add the fact that this is an attack on SE servers and they know it... they would report it to the FBI (like what happened last summer), money loss and high risk = not possible. A keylogger hidden in a third-party FFXI-related program is the most reasonable cause.

Perhaps I'm a little naive, but I'm sure I am right for the most part.

I shoulda rephrased by saying it was mainly a theory. See back in the day all you needed was a simple lil program to hack an account. What they would use, are pretty much every word in the english dictionary, through a notepad that you manually place into the program. Then you hit a simple button and let it sit there for days on end untill it found a match on the username and password. In all honesty, PC's are very easily manipulated. My honest thinking it might have been someone he knew that did it to him. Afterall, you need to know a few things in order for the method i have mentioned to work. We'd only really be able to find out what really happened, is when UNCTGTG himself explains what happened.
#25 Aug 24 2006 at 11:31 PM Rating: Default
umm the 4-letter 4-number pin is not a word. therefore your brute force idea is still not possible.
