It seems like there has been so much airing of dirty laundry on these forums, I would like this thread to be devoted to what are the really cool things about this game that keep you coming back? Is it your friends? What specifically? Quests/missions/exploring? What keeps you coming back?

one thing.! im coming back for is comunity... the game got lots of ppl that are friendly... I tested WoW in my abscence..it sucked. No comunity at all. u could play the game with not even typing to any1.. but in ffxi u have to talk to ppl.. and the party system is so much funner then the soloing.. If u wanna solo take up diablo again.. or another hack and slash rpg...

well ffxi came into my heart in 2003... had to leave it for 1.5 year so now im coming back 2006. ^_^

Honestly, The ingame is alot less hostile then some of the forum posts can be. I just kinda wander around, wave to random folks in my Travels, and /assist folks whenever time and Xp Buffers Forbid :p

Don't let the forums drag you down, there are honestly alot more nice people then Asshats on our server (IMHO @ least) :)

Well, Final is where my heart is. It is full of memories of things I did with people (like the first time someone showed me a rainbow in LaThiene Plateau, seeing if Pucks Aggro, first clamming vacation, final CoP cutscene, etc. etc.). So I don't think I will be moving on to another MMORPG, even after I leave this one. But my recent path has been bittersweet with people leaving, or temporary absences. How do you carry on when the friends you held so dear seem to be leaving? You know, the ones that touched your heart so much it makes you want to cry and delete your character when you think of Vana'diel without them?

I just wanted to hear from others - why they still play? For me, I have recently been questioning that myself. BRD horn is certainly appealing, as is the fun times I have with my linkshell. The promise of new areas as well. And, I must admit, the last job I leveled (BLM) is still really fun.

I also want to see my friends obtain their dreams. I want to see my Temu get his relic, see friends in their full AF2, watch the set pt I have been with for 1 1/2 years beat Maat, get sky, get sea, experience dynamis every week, and fight the big guys. I want to see Tate get to 100 woodworking, Orts get to 100 goldsmithing (come back from the evil empire, damn it). I want to see Sebby collect every dagger in Vanadiel, because that seems to be his hobby. I want to see team KAS fight all of the poppable gods in Sky (except Kirin), just to see if its possible.

What are the things you want to see? The things that keep you logging in every day?

I've quit and come back 3 times... only to get fed up with how much this game REQUIRES your soul and possibly a lower extremity in order to get anything out of it. Not a game you can just hop in, do something productive, and jet whenever you need to.

Then again most MMORPGS are like this. It's the human element... I got sick of waiting around for people, and whenever I tried to start something, it would take 2 hours just to get the ball rolling.

If I could find a cool group of people who knew how to hussle (PL, do LS stuff, work as a group) then maybe...

Basically the only thing that drives me to continue playing this game are ZMs and COP missions.

I've come to the point recently where I just stand in Lower Jeuno just waiting...waiting for someone to shout something interesting. All I really do lately is join skill up parties to try and break latent on club and party as ninja.

But if it weren't for CoP and ZM missions, I would probably quit anyway, because it's the stories that keep me going. I don't see the point in "needing" so and so ability/magic or whatever.

Stories. That's what does it for me. Unfortunately, they don't happen very often; they're very spread out.

Simply:

I play because/for my friends.

Levelling is a pain in the *** now. Missions are a chore. Watching c/s are nice, but the work required to get them is...

To me at least, this is a very social game. If not for my friends, I'd have no patience for the grind. Seems I just log-in out of habit nowadays, with most of my friends having left the game already.

One of these days, it might just be my last.

I'll agree with that... if it werent for the people, any MMORPG would become stale eventually. I've found this to be true for every one I've played.

Problem for me is Goodhobbit has all the friends... I think she stole some of mine! I guess I should be more involved in LS and charitable events, but I can never seem to find any LS that are more than chat and lvl up.
