OK, so after only venturing out of my moghouse for the past 2 months for friends AF&G1, Gobbies that won't pop, weekly set pt, and planned linkshell events, I decided to take a break from my money making crafting and venture into the world of Jeuno. I got a tell from a fellow asking me if I could help him with the Eldieme Necropolis clay quest - he was looking for 3 others. I told him that quest could easily be done with 2 people, since that is the number it took to open the correct doors.

We decided to head out, after he changed jobs to his RDM (so he could sneak/invis himself). I TOLD him bring 1 prism powder for the bomb, because it will aggro sight/magic. Since he did not know where to go in eldieme, I looked up on the web while I was headed there the location to drop. I left him at the gate and said to be careful (he was 25rdm/war at the time), and if sneak was wearing go to a safe place to recast. When I opened the doors, I told him to go south...He headed north...then when I waved at him and told him to go south, he headed south.

I proceeded to the gate while explaining to him exactly what to do - Before you enter the big room, cast invisible, make sure you have sneak, hug the wall, and head NORTH...go up the stairs until you see a lever. Wait until the bomb is facing the other way...cancel invisible, pull the lever...use the prism powder...do not use magic.

The next thing I know, he is in Jeuno. He said the bomb was too close to him so he warped. he never opened the door. When I asked him...he said he did not want to die..I told him that if he had waited until the bomb was not facing him, he could use the lever, and chances were that I would get there before it turned again...Besides, lvl 25... raise...thats even a good area for raise once bomb is destroyed (gee, one guess how I know THAT one). Then he proceeded to ask me if any of my other high level friends could go open the lever so he could finish his quest.

SO I guess here is my question...or my concern...or the end of my rant..whatever...Have we as some relatively high levels, spoiled lower levels so much that they can not even pull their own weight on their OWN quests? Was I asking too much of this guy who wanted to finish his quest that he actually open a door and buy a prism powder in case he needs it? And, NO, lvl25 was not his highest lvl...he was a 40something DRG when he first sent me the tell.

And, finally, I really want to be able to help random strangers. It is one of the very cool things of the game. There are a number of times when I listen to shouts and teleport everyone for free just so I can hi to new faces. What can I do to try to avoid something like this? How can I help the people, that, in MY MIND, deserve help the most - the ones that would do it themselves, but actually NEED someone to help them (like 3 people to open garliage gates). BUT, not someone that wants the quest done, wants the reward, but wants to put forth NO EFFORT whatsoever to make it happen. Any helps, thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated...Please please make them constructive?

Take heart in knowing not everyone you try to help is like this. In fact, the last group of random strangers I've helped complete quests really just needed me to show them where to go. They were well prepared with the right supplies and eager to do their own part even if it meant certain death for them.

Granted, there are the spoiled players that you ran into and it does get fustrating helping. In those cases I do the minimal and when they ask me if I can get others to go I always tell them they are busy, whether they are or not and to get with me another time if they want more help. Only in a few cases do I actually ask another friend to go and these are usually AF nm fights because I want the help.

/comfort Kamkam.

People who are industrious in real life tend to be industrious in the game; and similarly, people who are lazy-asses in real life will be lazy-asses in the game generally.

You have my accolades for trying to make the Ragnarok world a better place by lending a helping hand....to bad the person you were helping was a lazy cuss.

dont think all of us low level guys are too bad, im a 47DRG and i soloed mission 4 using RDM sub for sneak and prism powders. Castle O was a pain because i had to fight my way through a DC NIN and an EP BRD yag. but i did it, i came out victorious and i knew right then, that it was a more satisfying victory than any other in the game.

i say that because, i did what FEW do, SOLO for their airship pass when everything from middle of the zone will agro you and link and try desperately to kill you.

my thought goes along with, those who will risk it, and then see the benifits of doing it themselves, will be more fulfilled than those who did not.

now if only it was possible for a DRG to solo 5-1 & 5-2.... /sigh... tis impossible due to the archlich and the level 50 cap...

ohwell, i still hold my head high and announce proudly, that i, and I alone helped myself get my airship pass. (yes i used mysterytour to tell me where to go, but i did look for that information, and i did do my research, and i did what most people (of the newer generation of FFXI players) dont. Learn and do it themselves.

It's people like you that are a joy to help. And you are right, it's a huge accomplishment when you do it on your own. And sadly, it's a feeling a lot of players choose to cheat themselves of by expecting someone to do it for them.

Too true. It's why my LS has a very simple policy.

Everyone will help you.

No one will do it for you.

So many people ask for "help" and then require you to know what it is they need to do and help them get it, before you can actually 'help' them. How many times have we been asked "Can you help me with XXX AF2?" Only to find out the person has no clue as to what is needed, where it is, or how to go about getting it. To me, I am helping that person immensely by saying "Go look it up at www.whateversite.com". There. I've helped you. No charge.

The person that comes to me and says "I need help with my AF2. I know I need to go HERE and do THIS, but I'm not sure if I can solo it" Will get a lot more 'help' from me.

I hate when people don't even know the zone the fight is in. That's fine if you don't know how to get to the actual spot, but at least have the zone and a map coordinate or something that helps us find it. Nothing more fustrating then doing an af fight thinking it's going to be quick just to run around the place looking for a ???. The other massive pet peeve is people who don't do their legwork first. I often help out with rank 5 for people and I absolutely hate when they haven't even talked to anyone yet for it and haven't obtained the key items they can obtain on their own. They expect you to lead them around Jueno by the nose from npc to npc and even want you to get the meat for them so they don't have to buy it at the ah. =\ Same with a dragon fight I was asked to help with not too long ago. I join the party just to find out the person still has to go visit all of the cities. I didn't stick around. Even more fun when they don't research the quest and don't realize they have to visit the cities and you get the the bc just to find out that they can't enter. I once went with a party out of the kindness of my heart. 4 people needed it, 2 of us were helpers. Only 1 of the people who needed it actually did the legwork. How we got that win I will never know.

I'm sure we've all had our fair share of horror stories when trying to help. And I'm sure when we were starting out we may have caused our own share of horror stories when someone was trying to help us. I understand there is a learning curve and so I try to have extra patience on the newer players. When helping them I try to also guide them into how to fend for themselves and get themselves prepared for future things. But by rank 5 or af, if you haven't learned how to prepare yourself before asking for help, then you are most likely one of the ones that are looking for a handout, not help.

I have to agree that more and more players are so ridiculously spoiled that if it weren't for others they would still be in valkurm waiting for their subjob items.
But on the other hand there are alot of random people I have taken the time to help and althought they might have been a little unexperienced at the game they did try as hard as they could. So its a toss up >,>

I just don't get the point of playing the game if you don't actually participate in the challenging stuff. That's the big part of the game. The quests and missions and major fights are a big part of the game, why people always want the easy way out is beyond me.

I do everything i can to prepare. Like the other day i did Genkai III(which can be done solo with some help). I researched for everything, what potions should i bring. Macros i need for emergency. I died in Beaudeaux because the Ruby aggroed/poisoned me I managed to escape but the poison killed me. So the next run i bring a antidote with me.

After I got the last piece in Castle Oztroja i was bursting with pride that i said "I finished genkai III" in Port Jueno but right away said "MT" to pretend i am just talking to someone. I got 1 |Congrats| and it felt so good.

Before asking for help i usually plan for it because i hate it when i just follow a person around. Most of the time they already forget how to go there, so a little help from you wont hurt. I draw imaginary lines on maps on how i will travel inside the place. What possible threats there are for me so that if i ever i get lost i can survive...

The person is there to help you not to do the quest for you.

There is nothing wrong with trying your best and dying to accomplish a goal in FFxi...It is a game afterall. If you don't risk, you will never obtain the sweet nectar of victory.

While dying in FFxi isn't pleasant, I find it is generally instructive and teaches me to try to not make the same mistake again.... I generally play bst and tend to die regularly ... /shrug

Some examples:

To obtain Rank4, it was truly a lesson of stealth (sneak/invis) vs. brawn to avoid the mobs as much as possible until we could reach the top of the tower and fight the NM for the key (went as whm33).

To obtain Rank5, I think I must have died 6 times to finish that mission as a whm34....but when it was finally completed, it felt well earned.

For Genki 1, I was able to solo the exoray mold...hehe, died once... but taught me to be aware of what is behind me.

For Genki 3, I pretty much soloed the castle oz. portion, and duoed the beadeaux and davoi portion with a fellow Linkshell member who also needed it completed.... /cheers on Rmog (you are one cool rdm).

For Crawler's Nest Coffer Key, after 2 deaths .... I finally got it to drop off a helm beetle.

I think I have died about 300+ times, according to what the moogle told me....hopefully each death has taught me something useful.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help, but please do your research and any legwork necessary before seeking assistance to facilitate the successful completion of the objective.

Don't feel bad about the deaths. Mine were up there too. Usually from trying out something new or exploring. I also tend to solo a lot while lfp so that accounts for a lot of deaths. The range is an evil place with the magic aggro for a smn.

There is nothing like the feeling you get when you accomplish something you've been wanting because of your own hard work. The experience loss you may encounter while trying to do it is nothing.
