The last 2 good books I've read were Koushun Takami's Battle Royale (which I liked a lot better than the movie) and Max Brook's is World War Z.

Anyone have any suggestions for a Scifi/Fantasy-y style book/set of books?

Jennifer Roberson has a great 8 book series called the Cheysuli Series. It's fantasy, about a race of people who can shift their shape into animals and communicate telepathically with them. At the start of the series, this race of people are discriminated against by the Homanans, who also are effectively are committing mass genocide on them as well. It's very well written and has very good subplot, one of my favorite series of books of all time.

I swear that all those shapeshifter storylines have the same damn plot. Try the Battletech/Mechwarrior series or the Star Wars: Republic Commando series.

It's the only one I've read, so I wouldn't know. Do they all have prophecies to be filled where they are restored as the rightful rulers of their kingdom and requiring them to marry into people from different kingdoms to restore their original magical powers? And another magical race who worship the god of the underworld and always try and kill them?

Can't go wrong with Twatter McTwatterton aka L. Ron Hubbard. Was seriously a crazy guy but wrote some decent sci-fi. If you haven't read it, try Battlefield Earth on for size to get a feel for him (yes the movie was terrible but the book is decent).

Also, his Mission to Earth series isn't too shabby. All ten books should keep you busy for a week or so if you read as fast as me.

MAgic in the Blood was sort of different. ITs about a world were people can use match but this one girl can use it even more and all sorts of bad things happen to her etc. I think it was actually a sequel to MAgic in the Bone.

There was a book series a friend of mine lent me years ago about a scryer called Nevyn which translates into "No One". He cursed himself to wander the world forever, never revealing his true name, because he felt responsible for the events that led up to the woman he loved killing herself.

"No Name" was doomed to never be able to die and rejoin his love in the wheel of reincarnation, so he spent his life searching for each her new incarnations and trying to help her out in that current life. There were a couple of wars and an evil necromancer that was "No Name"'s main nemesis in the storyline.

The story spanned over 6-7 books IIRC. If I remember the name of the author and the title of the series I'll add it to the thread.

Edit: Just remembered it, the author is Katherine Kerr and it's called the Deverry series; the first book in the saga is "Daggerspell".
