Recommending a light/web novel that I've been with obsessed with for the past couple weeks. The author (Rifujin na Magonote) started releasing the web novel almost 2 years ago and has managed to put out 20 volumes so far. It's been serialized and the first 4 volumes have been published as a light novel, but the author is so much of a bro that he keeps the web novel up for everyone. It's set in a fantasy setting with swords and magic and stuff. There's character development, plot development, power development, relationship development, birth, death, references, etc. Some things from the later volumes can have their origins traced back to the earlier volumes, aka good writing.

Synopsis wrote:
A 34-year-old NEET otaku was chased out from his house by his family. This virgin, plump, unattractive, and penniless nice guy found that his life was heading towards a dead end. He recalled that his life could actually become much better if he can get over the dark history of his life.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at a high speed with 3 high school students in its path. Mustering all his strength, he saves them but ended up getting run over by the truck, which kills him.

The next time he opens his eyes, he had reincarnated to a world of swords and magic, as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world and a new life, Rudeus declared, "This time, I'll really live my life to the fullest with no regrets!" Thus begins the journey of a newly made man.

If you're not sure, I highly recommend giving at least the first volume a read, preferably the first two. To give you an idea of how much some people like it, translation efforts started in late May/early June. In these past 3 months we've basically translated 19~ volumes, or 200 chapters. Those of you who are waiting on translations for other light novels should know how insanely fast that is.

You can find the raws located here: http://ncode.syosetu.com/n9669bk/
BakaTsuki has most of the translated stuff: http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Mushoku_Tensei

If you have any other questions on the setting/plot/etc/anything I can probably spoil you or try to answer without spoiling, so ask away.

It sounds like a fairly interesting premise. If the light novel comes out in the US, I might have to pick it up.

There's no coma or waking up gimmicks. He died saving those people. His spirit/soul was reincarnated into this new body, but from what I can gather it seems more likely that an unknown person or power summoned his soul into that body. The possible reasons for this come into the open mostly in the more recent volumes, but there are related bits in the earlier volumes. The world that they're in now, I haven't figured out yet if it's supposed to be a parallel world or more directly related to our world with a large time variance.

Good recommendation! After you posted here I read the entire first volume; binged on it, really. The start was a bit slow and it took me a few minutes to get used to the writing style, but once it started getting into the fantasy stuff it was addicting. On to volume 2!

So I'm on Volume 4 now and while I still very much enjoy it, Rudi's actions make me profoundly uncomfortable sometimes. Remembering that he's basically a guy in his mid-thirties it's more than a little disturbing at how much he likes sniffing panties or attempting to seduce his 12 (now, what, 13 or 14?) year-old cousin.

I get that in a manga or an anime it would be played off as a gag; but in plain text it reads like some creepy pedophile. I don't think I understand the lolicon culture of Japan.

Even her mother and father were pushing for him to stick his finger in the honey pot in volume 2, remember? This is a setting where people can easily go out as an adventurer and die at 12. Mutual consent at that age wouldn't even be surprising. Hell, slaves being sex slaves at an even earlier age for real old fat men wouldn't be of place in this setting. (Remember Eris' kidnapping incident?) And while his mind is technically older, don't forget his physical urges are still tied to his body; A boy in puberty.

It was kinda creepy early on, but you should be moving away from that image by this point. Eris even sniffed his underwear in v3 iirc.

Not really a spoiler for you, but did it anyway for people who haven't touched v2/3 yet. Anyway during that journey you should start realizing he's closer to his body's age than his mental age in many aspects. He became a NEET hikki when he was ~15 after all. He's definitely a pervert though, but being a pervert isn't inherently a bad thing.

edit: That word is seriously filtered now? wow.

Also, everyone should also read DanMachi. It's good.

All good points, especially about his mental age; I guess I keep ignoring that and thinking of him as "36-year-old man" rather than "socially stunted shut-in with the maturity of a 15-year old." Also because Rudeus is constantly praised for his maturity. I think I'm very cognizant of consent and sexual assault issues these days and that's why I see it!

It's actually been censored for years; I just happen to break the filter because it's a little ridiculous. All Asylum tricks still do me good! Smiley: tongue

Reading a story with actual romance development is quite fun, isn't it? I can only pray they don't change anything when the LNs get that far.

Yep! Finished the Labyrinth Chapter (Volume 13), and most of the Everyday Chapter (Volume 14). Labyrinth was my favorite so far, though most of them have been good. Volume 14 just feels like filler, but it's not bad filler necessarily.
