Ok, so I have read through this whole thread. I am not one to brag about the sheer volume of material I have read. It is distasteful. Lets just suffice it to say I have a Bachelor of Arts, major in ENglish Literature. >.<
My overall attitude about literature is: Quality, no Quantity. I really dont give a rats fart hole how many books you read or are trying to read. I care about the quality of the reader's experience. Things like retention and revelation are more important to me than volume...
Some writes of note that I know some of the elitist snobs will no doubt disagree on that should be on Every Sci-Fi/Fantasy readinglist:
Ray Bradbury (Martian Chronicles)
Issac Asmiov (Robots and Foundation)
Robert A. Heinlein (read the whole catalogue :))
Stephen King (Dark Tower)
Orson Scott Card (Alvin and Ender)
Stephen R. Donaldson (Thomas Covenant)
Larry Niven
David Brin
Stephen Brust
ok, I am going to stop now. I have made a short list for people who cant get past the paper back racks at the local grocery/drug stores. You may have to do some research and may have to special order some of the books available by the above mentioned authors... good things are worth working for.
I got nothing against the authors you mentioned. I will read some of the stuff which I am not sure about. Other stuff I know or have read. Heck I may read some of the drivel regardless of my opinion... I just get so turned off by the flavour of the week crap in local stores >.<
