The funny thing is, one of the long-term gripes I've seen about this forum is the lack of actual moderation, instead placing too much reliance on the (innately flawed and easily abused) karma system. This is a gripe I've shared as well It does seem that as of late, admins are actually stepping in more, so I'm generally in approval.
I'm in agreement with Fynlar as well. A lot of people on this site can and are douchebags that need to be smacked down once in a while. If a person comes in with a legitimate question about FFXI and is thinking about joining, there's no need to antagonize him. It's only going to convince him to not play the game as he's going to walk away thinking FFXI has a worse community than WoW when the opposite is true. It's the way that this forum is moderated that part of the reason I came here. Do I go to BG? No, I find them to be full of douchebags that need to be smacked down and around to make them learn something or two about humility and empathy towards others. It's
Penny-Arcade's Fuckwad Theory in full effect over there. Granted, not everyone is like that, but there's enough of them to keep me away.

They used a stupid pretense to mute him and say he's banned if he ever does anything remotely mean/loldrivingawaynewcomers/etc again. It's basically retarded because it's the same thing quite a few other people on this forum do.
Also lol at the OPs responses to Rog in that thread, as they were far worse than the things rog said.
Yeah, the OP went overboard with his reponses as well, but really, he was provoked. He came to the Alla with a legitimate question, and the first response back was something of a spit to the face. It's not really fair to the OP to mute him over that. As for Rog, I think he should have known better. We've all been told by the admins to be nice to newcomers multiple times.

We're already the laughing stock of the endgame community in ffxi, I don't think making it kiddy time is going to help that much. Wiki is better for overall information and BG is better for anything endgame related, we don't have much besides our forum discussions going for us here, and the only people that really make a difference there are established posters. Newcomers don't often stay around past asking their first couple questions because there really isn't any need to.
You know, let them laugh at Allakhazam if they want to. I find a majority of endgame players to be elitist asses, so I honestly couldn't give a rat's *** about them. Sure Alla is weaker when it comes to wiki information, but really, I think people come here because it's an established forum with a strong connection with Square-Enix and because we have nicer people.

God knows I love MineAdmins (they know who they are), but some of this moderation feels petty. I understand that this is a business and if we are nasty enough to chase away new players/posters, then we are essentially "c-blocking" the companies bottom line.
Before anyone jumps in on "it's only a few thin skinned people," keep in mind that in the age of the internet all they need to do is post/tweet and their experience could potentially reach thousands people. Like pushing a snowball down a hill. A satisfied customer will tell probably a handful of people or less.
True, a person with a bad experience can tweet about it and it can turn a snowball into an avalanche. Sometimes it's justified, sometimes, it's not. Although, I think for the most part, you won't see bad PR over someone being muted because he was being a ***. :P Rog was hurting the company's bottom line by chasing the newbies away with insults.

Where this becomes ridiculous is our thread here. With elements of bawse/+1/ascii/et al, we are enjoying the site. Building a feeling of community that this board has never really had. We are trying to pull people in not get them to leave. The spam in here is harmless. It is also a far cry from the post pharming that goes on in journals.
That being said, the over-moderation in here feels extreme. Unnecessary, as we could easily be doing it in a journal ourselves. If we are having fun, others are going to want to play too, drawing in more posters. Take Darkdoom for example. He isn't even from this server. I'd say it's working for us. If we hide in a journal, we lose much of that opportunity. We are not forcing anyone to post. Hell, we aren't even forcing them to read our thread.
I don't understand how Darkdoom could be used as an example of over-moderation. He might be muted if he says something stupid or insulting, but the moderators aren't going to be kicking him out of this forum because he's not contributing to the current discussion. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to wander into the WAR forums and ask questions about their job because I'm a career WHM with a strong hatred for melee. Ok, I don't wander in to the WAR forum, but I could if I wanted to.
As for the locking for the 10k thread, I don't think it was fully justified. Maybe someone was having a bad day. I agree that we were just having fun. However, I think they just want to be consistent and not play favorites with anyone, because I do believe that what we were doing were against forum rules. It sucks, but that's how it goes. :\

While yes, this is a business, it's also a site for people who play video games and never plan on growing up. There has to be a balance.
Video games is serious business!!
