I always felt "Citi Field" was pretty dumb, as well as Citigroup. You know, a little too on the nose for New York. Like naming somewhere "Street Avenue."

But that? That's just horrible. My condolences to the three or four White Sox fans.

By 2018, a network of 500 sensor nodes situated around Chicago will monitor air quality, climate, traffic, noise and other factors that affect the environment of the city. The network is called the Array of Things, an urban sensing project that is being described as a "fitness tracker for the city," collecting real-time data that can be used to help improve Chicago's infrastructure, provide hyper-local forecasts and help you get to work on time.
[...]
The nodes are mounted on traffic poles or the sides of buildings and contain an array of sensors, including components that measure barometric pressure and sound intensity. The nodes are equipped with an infrared camera that will be able to measure vehicle and pedestrian traffic, but the creators of the Array of Things stress that the nodes won't be another form of surveillance—all images collected by the unit will be processed to collect data and then discarded.

Knowing the barometric pressure on top of the warehouse across the street seems like a worthwhile trade for sacrificing a little privacy, don't you think? I mean the military watches our e-mail all the time and we don't get anything from them. At least this way there's some mutual benefit.

You're more the exception than the rule.

While we're at it would it kill you guys to clean out my inbox occasionally? I mean if you're going to be snooping around in there might as well delete some of the spam while you're at it. If we're going to be sharing the space we should both do our part to keep it clean and stuff.

South Carolina clowns trying to lure your children with fat stacks of cash
Quote:
Residents of a Greenville County apartment complex say clowns have tried to lure their children into the woods with large amounts of money, and deputies have released the report Monday in connection to the claims.
[...]
But Pinciaro sent out a release on Monday saying, “Many of you have inquired about clowns being spotted in the woods near Fleetwood Manor Apartments. As of today’s date, there has been one incident report filed with our office regarding this. I have attached a copy of the incident report for your review.
[...]
A woman told the deputy that her son told her that he saw several clowns in the woods “whispering and making strange noises.” She said she went with her son to the area where he said he had seen the clowns, and her son told her that he saw several clowns in the woods who were flashing green laser lights before they ran away. The woman’s older son told the deputy that he heard chains and banging on the front door of their home on the night of Aug. 20.
[...]
The deputy said other children told him that several clowns appeared in the woods and tried entice them into the woods by showing them large amounts of cash. The children said they think the clowns live in a house near a pond at the end of a trail in the woods.

Fortunately, your children will be safe thanks to the actions of the S. Carolina Insane Clown (Hunter) Posse:
Quote:
The deputy said he investigated a report of gunfire the night before, and learned that men from the apartment complex, who were aware of the complaints about clowns, fired weapons in the direction of the wooded area after they heard noises.

No clowns were harmed, however, they later found that they had killed nine children and a dog. Ahyuck!

Warner Brothers reports own site as illegal

Basically using a badly constructed automated script to search for pirated content online has consequences. For better or for worse cooler heads prevailed though:

First, great name. Second, after the last three WB/DC movies I think it's in the public's best interest that WB make it as difficult as possible to access their products.

Apparently ITT, the predatory for-profit "college" shut down recently, blaming the federal gubbermint for not letting them prey on students dependent on financial aid.

The shutdown will affect about 35,000 students who were preparing for the start of classes this month and cost more than 8,000 employees their jobs.

In other news, the people in charge of this decision are doing just fine, thanks.

It could be worse. There is a large outdoor concert venue near here that gets most of the larger Summer tours. Years ago it was called Coca-Cola Starlake Amphitheater, later it was called The Pittsburgh Post Gazette Pavillion, and now it's called First Niagra Pavillion. I still call it Starlake and most people know what I'm talking about.

Hey now, they had plenty of time to reclassify themselves as a non-profit and continue to ***** over American students just like everyone else does. They were just lazy about doing it and paid the price.

It's interesting how we sometimes apply different standards based purely on the assumption that "for profit" means "greed", while "non profit" does not. The same practice of racking up tuition costs as student loans have become more easily available has been ubiquitous in the education industry for a couple decades now. It's not just for profits like ITT that do it.

It's usually the for profits that get shut down for doing it though. Meanwhile, the bulk of the tuition costs are being driven by the rank and file education industry which is protected by unions. The students are just as milked whether the extra cash goes into an endowment or the share price of stockholders. That's a distinction that really isn't relevant in this case.

That's not to say that ITT was a shining beacon of education or anything. Just commenting on the inconsistency with which we choose to assume that one is "preying" on students versus not. Public universities are just as much taking advantage of GSLs as anyone else.

I'm assuming you meant the overzealous regulators, right? I mean, the folks who ran ITT are out of a job, and the people who invested in it just lost a boatload of money. So they're not "fine" by any stretch of the imagination. The government regulator are fine though. Their jobs are secure.

Gbaji previously cited ITT as evidence of how affordable private trade and for-profit schools are, failing to notice that it cost more than every state college in the nation. He also tried to compare its tuition price to a website showing college costs that include books, fee, housing and other stuff (maybe he naively believes that for-profits just give you free books, don't charge fees and... offer free housing?). I feel pretty good just ignoring anything he has to say on the matter.

Honestly, judging from every prior discussion about education, Gbaji's whole beef is 99% about breaking up unions for partisan reasons and "free market" nonsense with the remaining 1% about learning coming in a far distant second place.
