Former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert gets 15 months in federal medical prison and two years supervised release following trial for violating federal banking laws while paying hush money to one of the four (five?) men he sexually assaulted while their coach in high school.

I still think it's funny that the problem wasn't the pedophilia, it was his ****** bribery structure.

"Yeah you ran that guy over while parking, sure, but you parked in front of a driveway. People could have been inconvenienced, and that's terrible!

Well, the statute of limitations for his sexual assaults had run out so he couldn't be directly charged with those.

If you can't get someone for fondling baby boners then at least get them for paying to fondle them.

On top of that, Individual A is suing Hastert for the remaining $1.3mil of the money Hastert was paying him. The argument is that the payments weren't hush money but rather compensation for harm caused.

Isn't there breach of contract since one of the conditions of compensation was not making this compensation public?

Guess that's for the court to decide. It was a verbal agreement so no idea what the contract was. Maybe the testimony with the FBI will factor in; did either say that it was hush money.

If it considered was payment to not report child abuse, hypothetically the FBI could nab Individual A on failure to report charges, which apparently in Illinois, the stature of limitations (20yr after victim turns 18) is far longer than statute on sex with a minor.

The events are well over 20 years old so that's a moot point.

The state attorney general wants to use this opportunity to reform the statute of limitations on child sex abuse cases, so that's something I suppose.

Jake Tapper had a great bit on the letters of support sent on Hastert's behalf before his sentencing (Video) -- "Hey, he was a great guy when he wasn't molesting students..."

Most other states have no time limit on that class of crime, which is a pretty easy fix. I may take issue with classifying some cases under this type, but I think more or less everyone is in alignment about timing.

I don't know if she was doing it for feminism, though. I got bored a few paragraphs in. I think it was just everyday self entitlement, though.

Not even remotely?

Seeing as how the US doesn't have paid maternity leave, she's free to quit her job for three months and find herself whenever she wants.

On the other hand, this is the NY Post. I assume they ran it just so Limbaugh can spend an hour going on about Millenials who want free vacations.

It's called a "baby" and yes they tend to do that. Smiley: rolleyes

I'd hope so. I'd hate to think a real writer actually thinks maternity leave is a vacation. Then again we live in a world where people think "sleeping like a baby" is a positive idiom.

Oh great, the next story is going to be about a newly discovered breed of flying weasels. This is what comic books have been warning us about.

Is that where they're getting it from? All I've heard from the lemmings on social media and elsewhere lately is "free stuff" this and "free stuff" that. I mean, if I'm to listen to my wife's family, I only like Bernie Sanders because I believe he's going to give me a ton of free stuff and money for doing nothing. I've been trying for months to wrap my head around the method of their madness. It's like there could be a whole science dedicated to understanding and making sense of stupid things people say.
