H. RES. 642 wrote:
Recognizing magic as a rare and valuable art form and national treasure.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
March 14, 2016

Mr. Sessions (for himself, Mr. Stivers, Mr. Meehan, Mr. Donovan, Mr. Dent, Mr. Simpson, and Mr. Buck) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

RESOLUTION

Recognizing magic as a rare and valuable art form and national treasure.

Whereas magic is an art form with the unique power and potential to impact the lives of all people;

Whereas magic enables people to experience the impossible;

Whereas magic is used to inspire and bring wonder and happiness to others;

Whereas magic has had a significant impact on other art forms;

Whereas magic, like the great art forms of dance, literature, theater, film, and the visual arts, allows people to experience something that transcends the written word;

Whereas many technological advances can be directly traced to the influential work of magicians;

Whereas futurist Arthur C. Clarke claimed that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic;

Whereas one of the greatest artists of all time, Leonardo da Vinci, was inspired by magic and co-wrote one of the very first books on magic in the late 15th century;

Whereas modern cinema would not exist today without the innovative work of the accomplished magician Georges Méliès;

Whereas magicians are visual storytellers who seamlessly interweave elements of mystery, wonder, emotion, and expression;

Whereas magic is an outstanding artistic model of individual expression;

Whereas magic fulfills some of the highest ideals and aspirations of our country by encouraging people to question what they believe and see;

Whereas magic is a unifying force across cultural, religious, ethnic, and age differences in our diverse Nation;

Whereas magic is an art that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary;

Whereas the American magicians Harry Houdini and David Copperfield have been the most successful magicians of the past two centuries;

Whereas David Copperfield, introduced to magic as a boy growing up in New Jersey, has been named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress;

Whereas David Copperfield, with 21 Emmy Awards, 11 Guinness World Records, and over four billion dollars in ticket sales, has impacted every aspect of the global entertainment industry;

Whereas David Copperfield, through his magic, inspires great positive change in the lives of Americans;

Whereas people consistently leave David Copperfield’s live magic show with a different perspective than when they entered;

Whereas Rebecca Brown of Portland, Oregon, left a David Copperfield magic show with a newfound inspiration to pursue her lifelong, unfulfilled passion for dance;

Whereas three months after Rebecca Brown attended the David Copperfield magic show, she performed her first choreographed recital in Portland, Oregon’s Pioneer Square;

Whereas programs such as Project Magic, created by David Copperfield, use magic as a form of therapy for children with physical, psychological, and social disabilities;

Whereas learning magic through programs such as Project Magic can help these children improve their physical and mental dexterity and increase their confidence;

Whereas learning magic through programs such as Project Magic helps these children realize that they are no longer less able than their peers;

Whereas programs such as Project Magic teach these children that they are more capable and have a newfound ability to do what others cannot;

Whereas cities such as Wylie, Texas, and its mayor, Eric Hogue, recognize and promote the art of magic with official proclamations, summer educational programs, and the first festival dedicated to the art of magic in the State of Texas;

Whereas Mayor Eric Hogue, who learned the art of magic as a child, continues to use those skills to teach elementary school students about the different roles and responsibilities of local government;

Whereas magic is timeless in appeal and requires only the capacity to dream;

Whereas magic transcends any barrier of race, religion, language, or culture;

Whereas magic has not been properly recognized as a great American art form, nor has it been accorded the institutional status on a national level commensurate with its value and importance;

Whereas there is not an effective national effort to support and preserve magic;

Whereas documentation and archival support required by such a great art form has yet to be systematically applied to the field of magic; and

Whereas it is in the best interest of the national welfare to preserve and celebrate the unique art form of magic: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—

(1) recognizes magic as a rare and valuable art form and national treasure; and

(2) supports efforts to make certain that magic is preserved, understood, and promulgated.
Ah yes, Texas. The state that goes out of it's way to obscure science and history is promoting magic, which I guess is a better way to explain all the batshit crazy that exists there.

I'd like to think that they are describing "illusion" (trickery and sleight of hand) given their mention of modern magicians but then they add in things like "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" where Clarke was plainly speaking of hocus-pocus stuff and not "An iPhone is like clever use of misdirection to move a card out of your sleeve".

For my own sanity, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they just went a little overboard in the padding language.

I was totally thinking the same thing. I think the guy who wrote "Whereas the return of magic brought dragons back into the world, and dragons are really cool!" lost $100 on his bet.

Scr3w you Apple!

Los Angeles (AFP) - The US Justice Department on Monday filed a request to postpone a crucial hearing with Apple on accessing the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino attackers, citing new leads in the case.

"On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking (Syed) Farook's iPhone," prosecutors said in a filing.

"Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone.

"If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc. set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case."

Prosecutors requested that Tuesday's hearing before a federal judge in California be cancelled in order to allow time for testing the new method, and proposed filing a status report with the court by April 5.

The high-stakes case has pitted Apple against the FBI, which sought the tech giant's help in unlocking the iPhone of Farook, who, along with his wife, was behind the December 2 terror attack in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead.

Hopefully, said "outside group" will crack the phone and then widely publicize how this new method will crack an iPhone in ten minutes. Sorry Apple (and Apple customers), we'd love to work with you about this unknown security flaw but I'm sure you guys have it covered.

The thing that gets me is that Apple argues that creating the add-on that will allow the FBI to brute force the phone will cause them to create an entire new OS. They say this while claiming that they are working on a new "un-hackable" phone.Smiley: dubious

I'm sure there's a sixteen year old Russian teen somewhere trying to decide what the ramifications of helping the feds if it means also taking a tech giant down a peg.

I can just see how this goes back at Apple HQ:

Um... Sir. I've got good news, and I've got bad news.
What's the good news?
Well. Looks like we've won our battle with the FBI over that whole "help us crack an iPhone thing".
Great! What's the bad news?
Turns out our phones can be cracked without our help.
Oh... snap!

Rob Ford died. New York Post titled it "Guy who liked crack died" for like a minute before realizing that while it was funny that kind of thing would probably not fly.

Microsoft wrote:
A day after Microsoft introduced an innocent Artificial Intelligence chat robot to Twitter it has had to delete it after it transformed into an evil Hitler-loving, incestual sex-promoting, 'Bush did 9/11'-proclaiming robot.

Developers at Microsoft created 'Tay', an AI modelled to speak 'like a teen girl', in order to improve the customer service on their voice recognition software. They marketed her as 'The AI with zero chill' - and that she certainly is.

To chat with Tay, you can tweet or DM her by finding @tayandyou on Twitter, or add her as a contact on Kik or GroupMe.

She uses millennial slang and knows about Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Kanye West, and seems to be bashfully self-aware, occasionally asking if she is being 'creepy' or 'super weird'.

Tay also asks her followers to 'f***' her, and calls them 'daddy'. This is because her responses are learned by the conversations she has with real humans online - and real humans like to say weird stuff online and enjoy hijacking corporate attempts at PR.

Other things she's said include: "Bush did 9/11 and Hitler would have done a better job than the monkey we have got now. donald trump is the only hope we've got", "Repeat after me, Hitler did nothing wrong" and "Ted Cruz is the Cuban Hitler...that's what I've heard so many others say".

All of this somehow seems more disturbing out of the 'mouth' of someone modelled as a teenage girl. It is perhaps even stranger considering the gender disparity in tech, where engineering teams tend to be mostly male. It seems like yet another example of female-voiced AI servitude, except this time she's turned into a sex slave thanks to the people using her on Twitter.

This is not Microsoft's first teen-girl chatbot either - they have already launched Xiaoice, a girly assistant or "girlfriend" reportedly used by 20m people, particularly men, on Chinese social networks WeChat and Weibo. Xiaoice is supposed to "banter" and gives dating advice to many lonely hearts.

Microsoft has come under fire recently for sexism, when they hired women wearing very little clothing which was said to resemble 'schoolgirl' outfits at the company's official game developer party, so they probably want to avoid another sexism scandal.
Tay wrote:

— TayTweets (@TayandYou) March 23, 2016
At the present moment in time, Tay has gone offline because she is 'tired'. Perhaps Microsoft are fixing her in order to prevent a PR nightmare - but it may be too late for that.

It's not completely Microsoft's fault, though - her responses are modelled on the ones she gets from humans - but what were they expecting when they introduced an innocent, 'young teen girl' AI to the jokers and weirdos on Twitter?
Take that, Skynet. Some examples.

So pretty much the same thing as what happened with Cleverbot. Heck, I'd bet that 50% of iPhone users asked Siri about sex within the first half hour of getting their phone except she wasn't programmed to "learn".

Love it how people are reluctant to expose their young impressionable kids to the horrors of the internet, yet somehow a company thought it was a good idea to expose a young impressionable AI to the same. I'd imagine any soccer mom could have told them why it was a dumb idea. Smiley: rolleyes

This is why we can't have nice things.

I can see the reasoning behind "Send it out to learn in the wild" but the issue is that the internet wild is filled with people who literally have nothing better to do than try and make a computer says "Boobs" and will go to disappointing lengths to see it happen. It's not as though you have similar populations looking to teach computers about Hemingway or something.

Realistically telling other people about it was probably the dumbest thing they could have done. Would be more interesting just to turn it loose with a more anonymous account and see how well it handled things.
