Sure, and the petition says as much. They were just informing EA, as consumers, that they did not want a product she was part of. The fact that people didn't know she wasn't part of it is secondary; I never heard about it so I've no idea how the rumor started.
Heck, if I knew Sarkeesian was involved in a game, I'd be less inclined to buy it. Her videos give me little reason to think she knows much of anything about making a decent game versus raising a ruckus and I'd assume the developers were putting a Sarkeesian Stamp of Approval over game quality in spending time/money on hiring her. I wouldn't bother to sign a petition though because I think the whole GG/Anti-GG thing is fairly silly and wouldn't want to play into it and because I just don't care that much about games. Not buying it would be 'protest' enough.
I'm more confused by your mocking of them making a petition. Ok, I get it from a "Har, har, theys so dumb!!!" standpoint and mocking the other side just because. If someone was actually concerned about the violence angle here rather than just being "right", this should be a huge win and something to be, if not celebrated, at least not mocked.
