They are given to us for our 18th birthdays by the Government. Every male child in Canada gets 3 plaid flannel shirts mailed to them. One red, one blue and one green. Red are for those who wish to go into logging, blue are for those who wish to go into fisheries and green are for those who wish to go into Agriculture. They are symbolic of Canadas initial three major industries. (we are a very color coordinated people look at our money.)
They also include a list of acceptable euphemisms associated with a particular industry on a card in the pocket. (so you can be polite while being pissed off).
HBC actually lobbied for Britain to write this into law, which is kinda of bogus because they make all the Shirts. But it is Canadian tradition for over 200 years.
