We Righteous British are now entangled in the EU, which is currently going through a mild crisis. A teenage crisis, it's all spotty and full of angst and kicking out and does not what it wants. Frankly the EU is not something you would want to ask you out. Add to it's pain that it's almost broke and would ask for you to pay for the date.
Many in the UK wish to leave the EU and there is a party for this. No .. not a tea party or an afternoon picnic, but a real political one. It's called the UK Independence Party.

Back in 2006 David Cameron (Prime Minister of the UK) was caught saying:


Quite a statement now that they have performed very well, taking second place in a recent by election in South Shields
Even Cameron understands you do not win back votes by openly insulting a large proportion of the electorate.

So why am I posting this, why do I care? Well .. it's about quality. Quality of the politicians the political debate in the UK. The UK independence party is winning large support based on key principles which the main parties will not discuss or lay down election manifestos on (Immigration, membership of the EU etc). It is appealing to a huge disenfranchised core of the vote. I had a talk recently with one of the disenfranchised. It was quite an enlightening conversation. To paraphrase an hour of pub chat, I met a UKIP member and supporter who told me that as a white middle aged man with a family, he felt second class in his own country. There was no party fighting for him. There seemed to be a party or group for everyone else. He felt abandoned and carried some anger and soreness for this and UKIP was the party for him. We talked through the manifesto of the UKIP and I disagreed on many points and we had a nice evening disagreeing a lot over wine and beer. (I'm a filty liberal - lifelong lib dem voter)

I'm interested in what the UK based Asylumites think about UKIP and it's chances in the coming years in the face of such tepid performances from the 3 main parties. I'm thinking they are going to do well until the main parties start listening.

I disagree. It's not just luck. The parties have in the past differentiated enough that you had a choice in who to vote for.

The man in the pub had no party he could align to, no one he felt would push for the issues he truly cared about as all the main parties would not commit to, or discuss them. Leaving a ticking time bomb. He found UKIP, as have many others, and that membership has exploded. People do not agree with all UKIPs manifesto but they agree with enough of what UKIP stands for, to swing to it's cause.

Someone needs to start an Imperial resurgance party over there. France hasn't been invaded enough recently and they're getting bored.

Maybe we should just reform the Holy Roman Empire again.

Unfortunately I think he may be right, and that's as a Lib Dem voter myself. The failings of the coalition have been pretty successfully laid at the Lib Deb leadership's feet.

We've fallen lower in the polls than in recent memory, which is quite the swift fall from the best numbers ever just a few years ago. It's frustrating because if the party had actually stuck to any of their manifesto it would have been very good for the country.


Hey, the Empire is still alive and well, it just underwent a re-branding is all.

As far as UKIP goes, I agree with Kavekk for the most part.

While the EU is in turmoil I don't think leaving it would be in the best interests of the UK.
